{"id":70330,"date":"2021-02-02T14:58:44","date_gmt":"2021-02-02T19:58:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=70330"},"modified":"2021-02-04T16:13:52","modified_gmt":"2021-02-04T21:13:52","slug":"brock-and-niagara-college-introduce-new-pathway-in-labour-studies-and-human-resources","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2021\/02\/brock-and-niagara-college-introduce-new-pathway-in-labour-studies-and-human-resources\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock and Niagara College introduce new pathway in Labour Studies and HR"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Thanks to a new collaborative agreement between Brock University and Niagara College starting this fall, Brock Labour Studies students will have an option to combine a degree in Labour Studies with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/business\/program\/human-resources-management\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Human Resources (HR) Management graduate certificate from Niagara College<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Niagara\u2019s one-year HR Management program is normally open to post-secondary graduates only, but under the new agreement, the college will reserve 10 spaces each year for Brock\u2019s Labour Studies students, who may enter the program after their second or third year of university studies.<\/p>\n<p>Kendra Coulter, Chair of the Department of Labour Studies at Brock, welcomes the new regional degree option that combines multi-dimensional university learning with specialized job preparation, skill development and experiential education.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur communities need people with the critical thinking, diagnostic, and problem-solving skills to not only shape workplaces, but to do so with foresight and empathy,\u201d says Coulter. \u201cThose with the most understanding about the world of work are best positioned to be able to successfully navigate it \u2014 and improve it. This new pathway will deepen students&#8217; knowledge and skills in significant ways that will give them the edge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fiona Allan, Vice-President, Academic at Niagara College, says Niagara\u2019s \u201cshowcase HR Management program is a testament to excellence in applied learning and we are pleased to open a new pathway to the program for Brock University Labour Studies students.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe shared experiences students will gain by completing the requirements of both programs will benefit the HR industry in Niagara and beyond, as our graduates are poised to play a lead role in developing the most important assets of every organization \u2014 people,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>Brock\u2019s Labour Studies programs equip students with valuable knowledge about labour relations, workers\u2019 well-being, equity and diversity, and the future of work. The Department is widely recognized for its award-winning faculty members and innovative courses.<\/p>\n<p>Through Niagara\u2019s one-year HR Management program, students will gain intensive academic and applied learning experience in the HR field, including real work experience through a 300-hour internship. They participate in course-based applied research with domestic and industry partners to solve real-world challenges faced by employers. As part of the College\u2019s robust HR community, students also have opportunities to develop their professional competencies by networking and engaging with industry professionals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a strong synergy between the two programs at Brock and Niagara College.
