{"id":70268,"date":"2021-01-29T13:57:08","date_gmt":"2021-01-29T18:57:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=70268"},"modified":"2021-02-04T11:51:36","modified_gmt":"2021-02-04T16:51:36","slug":"brock-launches-its-first-indigenous-research-grant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2021\/01\/brock-launches-its-first-indigenous-research-grant\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock launches its first Indigenous Research Grant"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the months before she became Acting Vice-Provost, Indigenous Engagement, Robyn Bourgeois led a process that was to yield a first for Brock University\u2019s Indigenous researchers and researchers studying Indigenous topics.<\/p>\n<p>The Associate Professor of Women\u2019s and Gender Studies held extensive consultations with Two Row Council, the Aboriginal Education Council, other Indigenous members of the Brock community and staff from the Office of Research Services to prepare the Terms of Reference for an unprecedented internal funding source.<\/p>\n<p>The University\u2019s first-ever Indigenous Research Grant, valued up to $7,500 per proposal, is now open for applications from Brock faculty.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are really looking to support research that is Indigenous-centred: developed in conjunction with Indigenous Peoples and contributing in positive, reciprocal ways to Indigenous Peoples,\u201d says Bourgeois.<\/p>\n<p>Research and creative activities led by, or in partnership with, First Nations, Inuit and M\u00e9tis Peoples will be given priority, although research proposals involving Indigenous Peoples located around the world are also welcome.<\/p>\n<p>Topics identified through the consultations as being high priority include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>social innovation related to Indigenous issues<\/li>\n<li>knowledge-based practices in the development of Indigenous curriculum<\/li>\n<li>understanding health service utilization by Indigenous Peoples<\/li>\n<li>factors influencing recruitment and retention of Indigenous students<\/li>\n<li>governance and leadership<\/li>\n<li>knowledge-based practices for volunteerism with Indigenous Peoples<\/li>\n<li>Indigenous health practices and promotion<\/li>\n<li>Indigenous language revitalization<\/li>\n<li>addressing violence against Indigenous Peoples<\/li>\n<li>Indigenous community-driven research agendas<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The grant aims to help researchers develop their research programs and creative activities so they can apply to external granting agencies such as the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research for funding, among others.<\/p>\n<p>It also aims to support a more equitable and just way of scholarship, says Bourgeois.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s research that centres Indigenous ways of knowing and doing and resists extractive research relationships where Indigenous Peoples are treated as objects of study and, instead, ensures that they are partners in the creation of knowledge and in processes including the development of research strategies, ownership of data and dissemination of findings,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>The grant, and Indigenous-centred research, reflect the wider direction the University is taking, says Vice-President, Research Tim Kenyon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe program supports multiple pillars of the Brock Institutional Strategic Plan, especially building research capacity, and supporting a culture of reconciliation and decolonization,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m grateful to colleagues on Two Row Council and the Aboriginal Education Council for their input on the program, and to Dr. Robyn Bourgeois for her work over the past year in facilitating that input and crafting the program details.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Applications will be accepted on a continuous basis and will be adjudicated\u00a0as they are received\u00a0up until April 16.
