{"id":70160,"date":"2021-01-25T14:32:33","date_gmt":"2021-01-25T19:32:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=70160"},"modified":"2021-01-27T14:43:58","modified_gmt":"2021-01-27T19:43:58","slug":"busu-reaffirms-mental-health-commitment-with-major-donation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2021\/01\/busu-reaffirms-mental-health-commitment-with-major-donation\/","title":{"rendered":"BUSU reaffirms mental health commitment with major donation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Now more than ever, mental health supports are playing a pivotal role in the lives of students.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s the message the Brock University Students\u2019 Union (BUSU) hopes to send with a considerable donation to support the cause.<\/p>\n<p>BUSU contributed $160,000 towards Brock\u2019s Student Mental Health Fund, helping the University make huge strides in <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2021\/01\/brock-raises-more-than-250000-to-support-student-mental-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">not only achieving, but surpassing its $250,000 fundraising goal<\/a> set less than a year ago. The generous donation was also augmented by $30,000 in matching funds <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2020\/10\/anonymous-donor-to-double-future-mental-health-funds-raised-by-brock-community\/\">provided by an anonymous donor<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_70161\" style=\"width: 286px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-70161\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-70161\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Asad-Jalib-RS-1050x935.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"276\" height=\"246\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-70161\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Brock University Students&#8217; Union President Asad Jalib.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In 2018, BUSU made a commitment to contribute $320,000 over two years towards mental health services on campus. When that campaign ended last year, the decision was made to extend the initiative for an additional $160,000 towards the 2021-22 academic year, said BUSU President Asad Jalib.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur mission is to foster an ever-improving student experience that is transformational, enriching and empowering. A cornerstone of achieving that mission has been our contributions to mental health services,\u201d he said. \u201cContributing towards this cause in the midst of the challenging circumstances our students are facing right now has been extremely important to our team.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has forced most classes and activities online, leaving many students feeling isolated and struggling with their mental health, said BUSU Vice-President Rafay Rehan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSocial and extracurricular activities that took place on campus always provided students with an outlet to temporarily forget about the stresses that come with academics, coursework and constant deadlines,\u201d he said. \u201cIn an online environment and with a lockdown underway, it is much more difficult for our students to have proper school-personal life balance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rehan applauded Brock for its ongoing commitment to supporting student mental health, which for the third-consecutive year has earned the University a top ranking among all comprehensive universities in Canada for mental health supports in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2020\/10\/brock-retains-top-national-ranking-for-mental-health-support-and-climbs-in-student-satisfaction-cross-canada-reputation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">annual\u00a0<em>Maclean\u2019s<\/em>\u00a0University Rankings<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_70162\" style=\"width: 273px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-70162\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-70162\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Rafay-Rehan-RS-994x1050.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"263\" height=\"278\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-70162\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Brock University Students&#8217; Union Vice-President Rafay Rehan.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe most recent example of this is the <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2020\/11\/brock-extends-holiday-break-moves-back-the-start-of-winter-term\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">extension of the holiday break<\/a> that was provided to give students valuable time to rest and better prepare for the Winter Term,\u201d Rehan said of the decision made in December. \u201cThis new normal has taken a toll on our members and BUSU is appreciative of University administration for being cognizant of their struggles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Funds raised for the Student Mental Health Fund will increase and improve services for students seeking mental health resources. Brock will be able to increase programming in response to surging needs and provide greater access to clinical support staff.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThank you to BUSU and its executive leadership for their continued support towards this important cause,\u201d said Gord Arbeau, Associate Vice-President, Advancement and External Relations. \u201cThe University is made stronger by the dedication and excellence of our student leaders. BUSU has been, and continues to be, a generous and much-valued partner.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While Brock\u2019s goal for the Student Mental Health Fund was met, more support is needed as demand for mental health and wellness resources continues to increase during these challenging times.<\/p>\n<p>Jalib encouraged others to support the cause and, in turn, the decision makers of the future.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur country will look to the students of today to solve the problems of tomorrow, and we will need them to play a vital role in the recovery of our nation,\u201d he said. \u201cJust as we will depend on our students, right now our students are depending on us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To donate to the Student Mental Health Fund, visit\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/donate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">brocku.ca\/donate<\/a>\u00a0and select \u2018Student Mental Health\u2019 as the designation for the gift.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to its monetary contributions, BUSU will support student mental health this week through a series of Bell Let\u2019s Talk Day initiatives.
