{"id":70113,"date":"2021-01-21T09:52:24","date_gmt":"2021-01-21T14:52:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=70113"},"modified":"2024-09-01T09:55:00","modified_gmt":"2024-09-01T13:55:00","slug":"haggart-platform-regulation-is-too-important-to-be-left-to-americans-alone","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2021\/01\/haggart-platform-regulation-is-too-important-to-be-left-to-americans-alone\/","title":{"rendered":"HAGGART: Platform regulation is too important to be left to Americans alone"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Blayne Haggart, Associate Professor of Political Science at Brock University, had a commentary piece recently published by <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/7578733\/donald-trump-social-media-regulation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Global News<\/a> about the possibility of creating multilateral regulation of global social media platforms by democratic countries.<\/p>\n<p>He writes:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe fact that Twitter\u2019s\u00a0decision to ban permanently U.S. President Donald Trump from its platform\u00a0is being treated almost as consequentially as the actual armed insurrection at the U.S. Capitol highlights a growing awareness of the power of internet platforms and internet infrastructure companies in setting the rules that govern Americans\u2019 lives.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Twitter\u2019s assertiveness \u2014 echoed by Apple, Google and Amazon\u2019s\u00a0decision to ban the right-wing social media app Parler\u00a0from their respective businesses \u2014 is much more than an American story. As global platforms, this newfound willingness to censor problematic speech and problematic actors will almost certainly inform how they conduct their business in the rest of the world.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Watching this debate unfold from outside the U.S. has been an odd experience. It\u2019s a very American debate: American platforms reacting to an attempted coup spurred by the sitting U.S. president, in the context of the particular U.S. legal system and an ideology that treats free speech as a paramount, almost sacred, value.
