Tales of the Niagara-on-the-Lake Tennis Club will live on after being preserved by a Brock History student.<\/p>\n

Adam Williamson, in his fourth year at the University, worked this past fall to document the club\u2019s 50-year history by interviewing members about their memories related to the organization.<\/p>\n

Williamson worked closely with Elizabeth Vlossak, Associate Professor of History, Julie Stevens, Associate Professor of Sport Management, and Niagara-on-the-Lake Tennis Club board member Rosemary Goodwin to design and carry out the oral history project.<\/p>\n

Williamson\u2019s interviews with longtime club members enhance the club\u2019s recorded history by preserving first-hand accounts of club events and member experiences.<\/p>\n

Documenting the club\u2019s history is important to the community, says Goodwin, a member since 1988.<\/p>\n

The club was a site for significant games from 1885 to 1920 and hosted the international Championship of Canada tournaments.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think a 50-year history of the Tennis Club provides an insight into the 50-year history of the entire community,\u201d says Goodwin. \u201cFor anyone studying the growth of our town over that period of time, the development of the Tennis Club is a small slice of the larger story.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Niagara-on-the-Lake Tennis Club is a very successful volunteer sport organization, but that\u2019s the result of all the cumulative efforts of countless individuals across the years,\u201d says Goodwin.\u00a0 \u201cWhen we understand that, we\u2019re more likely to make the good decisions that will keep things rolling in a positive way.\u201d<\/p>\n

The project required Williamson to research best practices for doing oral history and to consider ethical guidelines in presenting people\u2019s stories. The idea of shared authority was very important in the design of the project, ensuring that the participants didn\u2019t lose control over their stories.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were trying to speak with a lot of older members at the club who were in their 80s,\u201d says Williamson. \u201cThere was one person who passed away days before the interview and it really drove home the importance of why we need to do this.\u201d<\/p>\n

Williamson worked closely with Goodwin, doing background research and compiling a list of whose stories to focus on.<\/p>\n

Oral history interviews were new to Williamson and doing them remotely during the pandemic added an extra layer of complexity.<\/p>\n

\u201cDigital interviews are a lot tougher than I thought,\u201d he says. \u201cThere\u2019s a lot of adapting and trying to troubleshoot.\u201d<\/p>\n

Williamson would call his interviewees and walk them through joining his Microsoft Teams meeting. In some cases, interviews were recorded outdoors and Goodwin was able to assist the participants in person. But nature didn\u2019t always co-operate.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had one interview where we were competing with cicadas in the park and then someone decided they were going to cut down a tree,\u201d says Williamson, whose work was funded through a Brock Research Training Award.<\/p>\n

The audio and video recordings will be housed in Brock\u2019s Sport Oral History Archive (SOHA) when it launches later this year. SOHA is co-led by Vlossak and Stevens.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis local community engagement initiative has prospered through the close collaboration between Rosemary and Adam,\u201d say Vlossak and Stevens. \u201cAdam’s work has been key to starting SOHA, having\u00a0laid the foundation to mentor future students and create\u00a0more Niagara sport collections.\u201d<\/p>\n

For Williamson, the project has deepened his interest in the community\u2019s history.<\/p>\n

\u201cI always found Niagara-on-the-Lake history interesting. For a small town, it has such a rich history,\u201d he says. \u201cI want to do more projects related to Niagara-on-the-Lake history.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
