{"id":69515,"date":"2020-12-03T11:39:05","date_gmt":"2020-12-03T16:39:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=69515"},"modified":"2020-12-03T16:04:17","modified_gmt":"2020-12-03T21:04:17","slug":"social-sciences-event%e2%80%afto-showcase-faculty-student-research%e2%80%af","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2020\/12\/social-sciences-event%e2%80%afto-showcase-faculty-student-research%e2%80%af\/","title":{"rendered":"Social Sciences event\u202fto showcase faculty, student research\u202f"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From lake bottom sediment to digital data, from hockey to health care, and from local actions to global implications, there\u2019s no shortage of impactful research being done in Brock University\u2019s Faculty of Social Sciences (FOSS).<\/p>\n<p>The University community\u00a0is invited\u00a0to hear\u00a0about some of the compelling projects underway by faculty and students during the upcoming\u00a0Social Sciences Research Colloquium\u202ftaking\u00a0place\u202fonline\u00a0Wednesday, Dec.\u00a09\u202ffrom\u00a01 to 4 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>This\u00a0annual\u00a0event recognizes the outstanding achievements of FOSS researchers\u202fand gives\u202faward\u202frecipients an opportunity to present their\u00a0findings\u00a0to the Brock community\u00a0and wider public.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s\u00a0virtual colloquium will\u00a0feature\u00a0recent recipients of FOSS faculty awards\u00a0that recognize\u00a0consistent records of outstanding research achievements as reflected in the quality and quantity of refereed publications, grants awards and other research activities.<\/p>\n<p>Featured recipients include Michael\u00a0Pisaric, Professor of Geography and Tourism Studies,\u00a0who received the 2019 Distinguished Researcher award; Assistant Professor Karen Louise Smith from the Department of Communication, Popular Culture and Film, who received the 2019 Untenured Researcher of the Year award; and Nicole Goodman,\u00a0now\u00a0Associate\u00a0Professor of Political Science, who received the Untenured Researcher of the Year award in 2018, but was unavailable to\u00a0present\u00a0until this year.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to faculty\u00a0members,\u00a0three winners of the Social Sciences Student Research Award were\u00a0selected\u00a0to\u00a0present, including\u00a0Pulkit Garg, who is pursuing a Master of Sustainability supervised by Professor of Biology\u00a0Liette\u00a0Vasseur; Jessica Falk, a Master of Arts candidate in Social Justice and Equity Studies, who\u00a0is supervised by Margot Francis, Associate Professor of Women\u2019s and Gender Studies; and Master of Arts candidate in Critical Sociology\u00a0Appiah Bonsu, who\u00a0is supervised by Associate Professor of Sociology Trent\u00a0Newmeyer.<\/p>\n<p>This is the second Research Colloquium to <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2019\/12\/award-winners-present-at-social-sciences-research-colloquium\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">showcase FOSS student researchers<\/a> alongside faculty award winners.
