{"id":6948,"date":"2010-12-03T11:00:28","date_gmt":"2010-12-03T16:00:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=6948"},"modified":"2010-12-03T11:00:28","modified_gmt":"2010-12-03T16:00:28","slug":"dec-6-memorial-marks-20-years-of-women%e2%80%99s-studies-at-brock","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2010\/12\/dec-6-memorial-marks-20-years-of-women%e2%80%99s-studies-at-brock\/","title":{"rendered":"Dec. 6 memorial marks 20 years of women\u2019s studies at Brock"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Centre for Women\u2019s Studies at Brock will celebrate its 20th anniversary on Monday, which is also the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/social-sciences\/undergraduate-programs\/womens-studies\" target=\"_blank\">centre<\/a> was established in memory of 14 female engineering students who <a href=\"http:\/\/archives.cbc.ca\/society\/crime_justice\/topics\/398\/\" target=\"_blank\">were killed at \u00c9cole Polytechnique<\/a> in Montreal on Dec. 6, 1989.<\/p>\n<p>A memorial service to mark the tragedy will be held in Sankey Chamber at 5:30 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>After the commemoration, Brock\u2019s Centre for Women\u2019s Studies will host a panel discussion about the creation of the centre and the importance of women\u2019s studies in the aftermath of the events that took place in December 1989. The event is open to everyone.<\/p>\n<p>Founders, past directors and other people instrumental in establishing the program will be on hand for Monday\u2019s service and panel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe academic women behind the creation of the Centre for Women\u2019s Studies at Brock were feminists who thought that a program examining questions of gender relations and patterns of gender and sexual oppression was needed,\u201d said Christine Daigle, Philosophy professor and the centre&#8217;s current director.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to critically examine such questions. We must unveil violence when and where it happens. We must speak up and refuse it. A critical analysis of such questions will strengthen our \u2018no\u2019 to violence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 1989, female professors from Brock&#8217;s six faculties, as well as a number of librarians, met to organize the program. Chemistry professor Mary Frances Richardson chaired the organizing committee.<\/p>\n<p>Brock\u2019s Senate approved the new program in December 1990.
