{"id":69376,"date":"2020-11-25T14:50:19","date_gmt":"2020-11-25T19:50:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=69376"},"modified":"2020-11-25T16:25:52","modified_gmt":"2020-11-25T21:25:52","slug":"series-of-brock-events-to-address-gender-based-violence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2020\/11\/series-of-brock-events-to-address-gender-based-violence\/","title":{"rendered":"Series of Brock events to address gender-based violence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brock is participating in 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence with a series of events to encourage positive change.<\/p>\n<p>The international campaign runs annually from Nov. 25 (International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women) to Dec. 10 (World Human Rights Day). Notably, Dec. 6 is Canada\u2019s National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women in honour of the 14 women who were killed at l\u2019\u00c9cole Polytechnique de Montr\u00e9al in 1989.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the week, Brock\u2019s Office of Gender and Sexual Violence Support and Education (GSV), through Brock\u2019s Office of Human Rights and Equity (HRE), will bring awareness to the campaign via social media, while also providing resources and tools to help end gender-based violence. GSV will additionally host three educational events to recognize the campaign.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, Dec. 1 from 5 to 6:30 p.m., the Brock community is invited to a virtual discussion led by artist Vivek Shrya. \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/human-rights\/brock-16-days-of-activism\/#1606178753963-cbdb379d-8e30\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vivek Shrya in Conversation: What I\u2019ve Learnt as an Artist and Activist in 10 Years<\/a>,\u201d will feature Shrya reflecting on her experiences as a multidisciplinary trans, queer artist of colour. She will be doing a live reading of her book, <em>God Loves Hair<\/em>, as well as leading a Q&amp;A session.<\/p>\n<p class=\"BodyA\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Jasmine Ramze Rezaee, Director of Advocacy and Communications, YWCA Toronto, and Robert Nonomura, Research Associate with the Centre for Research and Education on Violence Against Women and Children, will lead a second virtual discussion on Thursday, Dec. 3 from 2 to 4 p.m. \u201c<span class=\"Hyperlink0\"><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/human-rights\/brock-16-days-of-activism\/#1606178753963-cbdb379d-8e30\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: black;\">Gender and Sexual Violence in a Pandemic<\/span><\/a><\/span><span class=\"None\">\u201d will focus on gender-based violence in the realm of the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants are encouraged to submit questions ahead of the discussion <\/span><span class=\"Hyperlink0\"><a href=\"https:\/\/forms.office.com\/Pages\/ResponsePage.aspx?id=FRGudvwe8kqlNuKyRDrxoPjqOFeQ6HVFqX4u3nZU6OdUNENWVlVMTVJXOUdBSkMxMFFNSkJIRUpTVS4u\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: black;\">here<\/span><\/a><\/span><span class=\"None\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>To round out the week, HRE, GSV and the Department of Women\u2019s and Gender Studies have teamed up to host 2020 Throwback Trivia on Friday, Dec. 4 from 6 to 8 p.m. Join in the virtual trivia game to re-live the year, with a chance to win a $75 Visa gift card. This event is open exclusively to Brock students, staff and faculty.
