{"id":69336,"date":"2020-11-23T12:44:47","date_gmt":"2020-11-23T17:44:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=69336"},"modified":"2020-11-23T15:01:07","modified_gmt":"2020-11-23T20:01:07","slug":"habitat-for-humanity-ceo-to-discuss-why-volunteering-can-be-a-game-changer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2020\/11\/habitat-for-humanity-ceo-to-discuss-why-volunteering-can-be-a-game-changer\/","title":{"rendered":"Habitat for Humanity CEO to discuss why volunteering can be a &#8216;game changer&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Volunteering has many benefits beyond its positive impact on the community, says Julia Deans, President and CEO of Habitat for Humanity Canada.<\/p>\n<p>Deans will lead a presentation, \u201cBoost your career with community work and volunteering,\u201d on Wednesday, Nov. 25 at 11 a.m. as part of the free <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/goodman-group\/business-breathers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Business Breathers webinar series<\/a> facilitated by Goodman Group, the Goodman School of Business\u2019 community-focused learning and development services provider.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVolunteering can be a game changer,\u201d says Deans. \u201cSavvy employers know that it helps build networks, skills and community in a very different way than school and regular work \u2014 and they look for it on CVs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Deans will also share strategies for building volunteering into busy lives, so people can reap benefits sooner than later.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVolunteering for an hour or two a week is not only an investment in your future, it\u2019s also a great way to relax, meet new people, learn and feel good about yourself, and help your community,\u201d says Deans.<\/p>\n<p>Before Deans became a non-profit CEO with Habitat for Humanity Canada, CivicAction, Futurpreneur Canada, the Canada Children\u2019s Literacy Foundation and director of many non-profit and business organizations, she practiced law in Toronto and Hong Kong and built legal recruitment firm QD Legal in Singapore. She has been named one of WXN\u2019s Top 100 Most Powerful Women, a YWCA Toronto Woman of Distinction, and a Woman of Influence Canadian Diversity Champion. She is also a recipient of the Pearson Centre for Progressive Policy Leadership Award and the Goodman School of Business Distinguished Leader Award in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>Business Breathers feature 30 minutes of industry and faculty expert-led discussions, followed by a 15-minute Q&amp;A period. Topics focus on leadership, management and innovation, as well as the financial and social impacts of trending topics.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone is welcome to attend Business Breathers webinars.
