{"id":68926,"date":"2020-10-29T10:14:03","date_gmt":"2020-10-29T14:14:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=68926"},"modified":"2020-10-29T15:18:32","modified_gmt":"2020-10-29T19:18:32","slug":"nominations-now-open-for-accessibility-and-inclusion-recognition-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2020\/10\/nominations-now-open-for-accessibility-and-inclusion-recognition-award\/","title":{"rendered":"Nominations now open for Accessibility and Inclusion Recognition Award"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"BodyA\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">As it has for the past five years, Brock\u2019s Office of Human Rights and Equity Services (HRE) is looking to recognize an individual who has contributed to creating a community free from discrimination.<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"BodyA\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">The Accessibility and Inclusion Recognition Award (AIRA) is open to all University staff, faculty, students and volunteers. The award is presented annually on Dec. 3 in honour of International Day of Persons with Disabilities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"BodyA\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">The focus of AIRA is to allow for allyship to be strengthened and to act as an invitation to discuss how barriers that limit access to equality can be removed. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"BodyA\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cWith this award, we not only recognize an individual who has consistently and, when necessary, insistently, advocated for the rights of people of any abilities to receive equitable, safe and dignified treatment in their engagement with any services offered at Brock, we also recognize the individual and institutional barriers to inclusion that still exist and require our unrelenting attention,\u201d said Maureen Connolly, Professor of Kinesiology and Chair of the Anti-Ableism and Mental Health Committee (AAMH). <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"BodyA\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">To nominate an individual for this award, fill out this form on <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/human-rights\/accessibility\/inclusion-recognition-award\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span class=\"Hyperlink0\"><span style=\"color: black;\">the HRE website<\/span><\/span><\/a><span class=\"None\">. Nominators must include a description of the nominee\u2019s outstanding service to anti-ableism, accessibility or inclusive practice, along with two letters of support. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"BodyA\"><span class=\"None\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cNominating someone for this award is an opportunity to practice anti-ableism,\u201d said Connolly. \u201cEngage in taking action that makes disability rights an accepted and unquestioned standard, as well as demonstrating an authentic commitment to ongoing vigilance in support of diversity and inclusion.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"BodyA\"><span class=\"None\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Nominations for AIRA are open until Monday, Nov. 23.
