{"id":68725,"date":"2020-10-20T12:42:58","date_gmt":"2020-10-20T16:42:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=68725"},"modified":"2020-10-20T16:35:27","modified_gmt":"2020-10-20T20:35:27","slug":"student-leadership-experience-leads-to-data-analytics-career-for-goodman-grad","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2020\/10\/student-leadership-experience-leads-to-data-analytics-career-for-goodman-grad\/","title":{"rendered":"Student leadership experience leads to data analytics career for Goodman grad"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When Timi Olaoye (BBA \u201920) reflects on his four years at Brock University, his involvement with student clubs is top of mind.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey provided me opportunities to network with peers and industry professionals and experience an unparalleled level of education that sets me apart from others,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a competitive edge he\u2019s thankful for now that he\u2019s completed his studies and is pursuing his career full time.<\/p>\n<p>Olaoye is one of nearly 1,000 students who graduated Friday, Oct. 16 as part of <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2020\/10\/generation-without-borders-called-on-to-embrace-power-at-brocks-fall-convocation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brock\u2019s Virtual Fall Convocation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The new Bachelor of Business Administration graduate says one of his proudest moments came when the Data Analytics Students\u2019 Association (DASA) was recognized as Goodman School of Business\u2019 Most Innovative Club of the Year.<\/p>\n<p>Olaoye got involved with the club as a general member in his third year at Brock, and became President the following year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe outgoing President invited me to apply for the role, but I didn\u2019t think I could handle the extra time commitment while also balancing schoolwork,\u201d he explained. \u201cBut I realized, as I get older and advance in my career, I&#8217;ll have to take on more responsibilities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Olaoye also felt taking on a leadership role with the club could help bridge a gap between students\u2019 data analytics knowledge and the skills expected in today\u2019s workplaces.<\/p>\n<p>During his year as President, Olaoye organized guest speakers, networking sessions and a series of technical workshops with data visualization software, such as Microsoft Power BI and Salesforce Tableau, and machine learning software, such as IBM Watson.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe world is becoming more data driven,\u201d he said. \u201cData is everywhere we look: from our social and economic activities online to our everyday movement using various modes of transportation, such as Uber.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ability to pull raw data, manipulate it and draw valuable insight in an ethical manner puts students at the forefront of this ever-growing competitive and dynamic landscape, with regards to the commercial and industrial job market.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before getting involved with DASA, Olaoye was Director of Corporate Relations with the Goodman Business Students\u2019 Association. As part of his role, Olaoye developed a partnership between the Brock Innovation Group student club and Venture Niagara, a community futures development corporation, to create a financial literacy workshop for local entrepreneurs and students.<\/p>\n<p>This past summer, Olaoye worked as a student data analyst with RBC in Toronto. Last month, he was offered a contract role to continue his analytical work with the bank\u2019s monitoring and testing team.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy goal was to start off with an entry level data analyst role at a bank, so I could further develop my skills,\u201d he said. \u201cDown the line, I\u2019d like to manage a team of business intelligence professionals who analyze data and run predictive models.
