{"id":68352,"date":"2020-10-01T14:06:59","date_gmt":"2020-10-01T18:06:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=68352"},"modified":"2021-05-27T13:50:12","modified_gmt":"2021-05-27T17:50:12","slug":"grad-students-encouraged-to-apply-for-new-horizon-scholarship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2020\/10\/grad-students-encouraged-to-apply-for-new-horizon-scholarship\/","title":{"rendered":"Grad students encouraged to apply for new Horizon Scholarship"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Applications are now being accepted for Brock\u2019s Horizon Graduate Student Scholarship \u2014 a fund that will provide $1 million to high-achieving graduate students from Black, Indigenous, People of Colour and other under-represented groups.<\/p>\n<p>The scholarship will provide 20 students each year for the next 10 years with a one-time award of $5,000 and help to ensure the University continues to attract top researchers and students from various fields while building a diverse and inclusive university community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFostering a culture of inclusivity, accessibility, reconciliation and decolonization is a priority and pillar within the Strategic Plan approved by our University Senate and Board,\u201d said Brock President Gervan Fearon. \u201cThis scholarship is directly aimed at advancing this goal and priority.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is my hope that this scholarship will encourage and support students from Black, Indigenous and People of Colour (BIPOC) students and under-represented groups to explore research-based graduate studies and contributing to the Canada\u2019s desire to build inclusive institutions and communities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 2018, Brock established a new Institutional Strategic Plan that, in part, prioritizes fostering a campus culture of accessibility, reconciliation, decolonization and inclusivity. The Horizon Graduate Scholarship provides an important step towards achieving these objectives.<\/p>\n<p>The scholarship is open to any graduate student in a research-based program who self-identifies as an individual in an under-represented group.
