{"id":68270,"date":"2020-09-25T15:16:34","date_gmt":"2020-09-25T19:16:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=68270"},"modified":"2020-09-25T15:16:34","modified_gmt":"2020-09-25T19:16:34","slug":"as-cyberattacks-surge-deadline-nears-for-brock-employees-students-to-join-mfa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2020\/09\/as-cyberattacks-surge-deadline-nears-for-brock-employees-students-to-join-mfa\/","title":{"rendered":"As cyberattacks surge, deadline nears for Brock employees, students to join MFA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Just as an Oct 7 deadline approaches for employees and students to bolster Brock\u2019s cyber security by registering for Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA), a new rash of <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/information-technology\/service-catalogue\/security-and-access\/cyber-security-awareness-and-training\/phishing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">phishing scams<\/a> is highlighting the urgency for collective action against a relentless threat.<\/p>\n<p>In the latest phishing attacks, scammers posing as service providers contact Brock network users and seek to change specific banking information. Members of the Brock community are urged to stay alert and not engage with suspicious emails or phone calls.\u00a0Report anything suspicious to\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:itsecurity@brocku.ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">itsecurity@brocku.ca<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Globally, cyberattacks happen every 11 seconds, and there is a growing danger in major ransomware attacks where criminals infiltrate and lock down an organization\u2019s entire network until a ransom is paid. Universities have increasingly become victims.<\/p>\n<p>To defend against the threat, many organizations are requiring all of their system users to implement MFA log-in security. For people protected by MFA, even if someone knows your password they won\u2019t be able to access your accounts.<\/p>\n<p>So far, thousands of Brock faculty, staff and students have joined MFA. The rest need to register by Oct 7, by going to Brock\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/information-technology\/service-catalogue\/security-and-access\/multi-factor-authentication\/#1566523411846-0efe6161-ac5b1170-020b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MFA page<\/a> and clicking on the tab \u2018Setting Up MFA.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Brock will require MFA in order to access Office 365, Workday, Sakai, Remote Desktop Connections, <a href=\"http:\/\/my.brocku.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">my.brocku.ca<\/a>\u00a0and the new Virtual Teaching Computer Labs.<\/p>\n<p>Defending the University requires commitment and effort from everyone, says David Cullum, Associate Vice-President, Information Technology.
