{"id":67620,"date":"2020-08-19T10:54:40","date_gmt":"2020-08-19T14:54:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=67620"},"modified":"2020-08-19T10:54:40","modified_gmt":"2020-08-19T14:54:40","slug":"inaugural-international-open-day-draws-global-audience","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2020\/08\/inaugural-international-open-day-draws-global-audience\/","title":{"rendered":"Inaugural International Open Day draws global audience"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At the end of (almost) every summer, Brock&#8217;s\u00a0team of international recruitment officers pack their bags and board flights in search of the University\u2019s next cohort of Badgers.<\/p>\n<p>This year, the COVID-19 pandemic forced them to get creative with online recruitment initiatives that showcase the Brock experience and dream of studying in Canada.<\/p>\n<p>Along with daily outreach and interactions with prospective students and external stakeholders, the Department of International Market Development (IMD) had already transitioned their recruitment efforts virtually, including weekly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=nhwo9pUIXE4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Coffee with a Recruiter<\/a> sessions, but students were craving more.<\/p>\n<p>This led to the development of <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/international\/openday\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">International Open Day<\/a>. The virtual conference-style event was held on Aug. 12 and 13 and was designed to teach students about every aspect of university life.<\/p>\n<p>More than 260 incoming and prospective international students, along with parents and high school counsellors from more than a dozen countries, took part in the pilot project.<\/p>\n<p>Students from Bangladesh, Barbados, China, Colombia, Ghana, Grand Cayman\u2019s, India, Indonesia, Jamaica, Kingdom of Bahrain, Mexico, Nigeria and the U.K. all registered in the days leading up to the event.<\/p>\n<p>Sessions included an overview of Brock, a mock lecture from a professor, a live campus tour and an informative presentation on immigrating to Canada.\u00a0In total, students could choose from more than 15 interactive webinars, which were offered in either the morning or afternoon to account for the time zone differences of a global audience.<\/p>\n<p>One of the most well-attended sessions was a live panel discussion with <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/international\/future\/international-student-ambassadors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brock\u2019s international student ambassadors<\/a>, where they discussed why they chose Brock and shared their experience studying in Canada.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGoing to university is a big transition in everyone\u2019s life,\u201d said International Student Ambassador and Brazil native Marcelo Correa during the panel discussion. \u201cI always advise students to make the best of their experience and get involved on campus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The panel discussion was led by Victoria Steele, Associate Director, IMD.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe believe that it\u2019s really important that our students share their Brock story,\u201d said Steele. \u201cOur ambassadors provide an invaluable addition to an event like this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Open Day event was a collaborative effort from Brock International\u2019s dedicated group of staff, who offered sessions in their area of expertise including academic support, getting involved, financial support, student engagement and a mock ESL class.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith COVID-19 continuing to affect international travel and large event gatherings, students will be looking for new ways to learn about studying in Canada,\u201d said Steele. \u201cOpen Day gives us a global platform to connect with students.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the recruitment cycle, future Open Days will be scheduled to invite a wider audience, including international high school counsellors and transfer students.
