{"id":67593,"date":"2020-08-17T09:40:03","date_gmt":"2020-08-17T13:40:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=67593"},"modified":"2024-09-01T09:55:05","modified_gmt":"2024-09-01T13:55:05","slug":"kitossa-how-hollywoods-alien-and-predator-movies-reinforce-anti-black-racism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2020\/08\/kitossa-how-hollywoods-alien-and-predator-movies-reinforce-anti-black-racism\/","title":{"rendered":"KITOSSA: How Hollywood\u2019s \u2018Alien\u2019 and \u2018Predator\u2019 movies reinforce anti-Black racism"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"Body\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Tamari Kitossa, Associate Professor of Sociology at Brock University, recently published a piece in <\/span><span class=\"Hyperlink0\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/how-hollywoods-alien-and-predator-movies-reinforce-anti-black-racism-127088?utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=Latest%20from%20The%20Conversation%20for%20August%2017%202020&amp;utm_content=Latest%20from%20The%20Conversation%20for%20August%2017%202020+CID_e36b5948ddd297b4eed1a9c0f1b5f5b2&amp;utm_source=campaign_monitor_ca&amp;utm_term=Alien%20and%20Predator%20movies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Conversation<\/a><\/span><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> where he explains Hollywood\u2019s role in the reinforcement of anti-Black racism.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">He writes:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\"><i><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cWhat makes Black people more likely than others to be killed, beaten, tortured and raped by white police officers and vigilantes?\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span class=\"Hyperlink0\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/science\/story\/2019-08-15\/police-shootings-are-a-leading-cause-of-death-for-black-men\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i>Although Black men are killed by the police more than any other group,<\/i><\/a><\/span><\/span><i><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0Black women are\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span class=\"Hyperlink0\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><a href=\"https:\/\/scholarship.law.wm.edu\/cgi\/viewcontent.cgi?article=1462&amp;context=wmjowl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i>regular targets of police violence<\/i><\/a><\/span><\/span><i><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0even though this fact is often rendered invisible.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\"><i><span lang=\"EN-US\">A culture and history of racist misrepresentation may have something to do with it. Why has there been considerable tolerance among the silent majority of white people for animal-like, demonic representations of Black people in media and popular culture?<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\"><i><span lang=\"EN-US\">The short answer is that we are dealing with a culture of domination. It is a culture that thrives on the sexualized demonization of Black people.
