{"id":67007,"date":"2020-07-10T10:50:02","date_gmt":"2020-07-10T14:50:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=67007"},"modified":"2020-07-13T08:35:38","modified_gmt":"2020-07-13T12:35:38","slug":"brock-community-mourns-the-loss-of-arlene-bannister","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2020\/07\/brock-community-mourns-the-loss-of-arlene-bannister\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock community mourns the loss of Arlene Bannister"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Brock University community is mourning the death of Arlene Bannister, who passed away Sunday, July 5 at the age of 59.<\/p>\n<p>As the Aboriginal Recruiter\/Liaison Officer in Aboriginal Student Services (AbSS), Bannister is fondly remembered as a tireless and protective advocate for her students and coworkers.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_67011\" style=\"width: 355px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-67011\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-67011\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/IMG_5569-770x1050.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"345\" height=\"471\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-67011\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Brock University lowered its flags to half-mast Wednesday, July 8 in honour of Arlene Bannister.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Sandra Wong, Brock\u2019s Director of AbSS, said the care and knowledge Bannister provided to students at the University, as well as in a prior position at Niagara College, were roles she cherished and thrived in.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was as though the Creator put her on this earth to provide those supports and services to students,\u201d she said. \u201cThey meant everything to her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Aboriginal Events Co-ordinator Cindy Biancaniello said Bannister loved to connect with students through activities that had been passed down to her.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;She knew everything about leather and beading and traditional methods of making medicine pouches,\u201d said Biancaniello. \u201cShe was very strong in her Anishinaabe culture.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As a member of the Chippewas of Rama First Nation, Bannister played a central role in the development of the University\u2019s smudging policy and was a source of guidance on the practice as well as a caretaker of the spaces where it took place at Brock.<\/p>\n<p>Having influenced the journeys of students throughout the region, including having her own children take part in AbSS programming, Bannister was a vocal advocate for the Indigenous students she worked with.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe took great pride in her work and was not afraid to have her words heard,\u201d said Wong.<\/p>\n<p>She was also a beloved coworker and friend in a tightly knit AbSS team and beyond.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI really got to know Arlene as a dear friend and saw that she was always putting others first,\u201d said Biancaniello.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have been friends for nearly 15 years and had so many fun times together,\u201d said Wong. \u201cShe was always making us smile in AbSS, and we loved to scare and joke with each other, but she also had friends throughout the University, from people who worked in the kitchen to people working in finance, and everywhere in between.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArlene will be dearly missed by us all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To honour Bannister, the University lowered its flags to half-mast on Wednesday, July 8.<\/p>\n<p>A celebration of life will take place when physical distancing regulations allow for Bannister\u2019s family and friends to gather together.<\/p>\n<p>Students and other members of the Brock community who would like to talk or share memories of Bannister are invited to email Wong at <a href=\"mailto:swong2@brocku.ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">swong2@brocku.ca<\/a> or Biancaniello at <a href=\"mailto:cbiancaniello@brocku.ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cbiancaniello@brocku.ca<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Brock University community is mourning the death of Arlene Bannister, who passed away Sunday, July 5 at the age of 59.
