While the pandemic will recede, the epidemic of\u00a0intimate partner violence\u00a0in Canada will remain.\u00a0<\/em><em>The death toll of people \u2014 overwhelmingly women \u2014 killed by their intimate partners\u00a0continues to climb. Decisive action must be taken to remove or, at least, mitigate the barriers to leaving abusive relationships.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Companion animals, or pets, aren\u2019t generally thought of as barriers, yet they often are in the context of intimate partner violence. The majority of Canadians\u00a0have pets\u00a0and\u00a0consider them family.\u00a0<\/em><em>Most domestic violence shelters in Canada, however, don\u2019t accommodate pets.
