The killing of George Floyd and other African Americans by police has led to civilian protests and outrage across the United States and around the world. The gaze has now turned to Canadian police.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>According to the\u00a0Ontario Human Rights Commission, Black Torontonians are 20 times more likely to be shot by police than the city\u2019s white residents. Despite\u00a0numerous inquiries\u00a0and\u00a0commission\u00a0after\u00a0commission\u00a0after\u00a0commission\u00a0into police violence over the years \u2014 many with strong recommendations for police reform \u2014 nothing changes. Why?\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Universities, news media, Hollywood, politicians and economic elites continually drum into our heads that police \u201cserve and protect\u201d \u2014 and so goes the police motto in Toronto. This narrative of police helps to fuel the fantasy that they are necessary in their present configuration.
