If you would like to tell your department\u2019s story, please email <\/span><\/i><span class=\"Hyperlink0\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><a href=\"mailto:stapp@brocku.ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i>stapp@brocku.ca<\/i><\/a><\/span><\/span><i><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"Default\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">While the University community remotely prepares to transition to the Spring and Summer Terms virtually, the Department of Residences staff continues to work on-site to provide essential services.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Default\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">When Brock <\/span><span class=\"Hyperlink1\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/coronavirus\/2020\/03\/13\/brock-suspending-face-to-face-classes-and-moving-toward-alternative-forms-of-delivery\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">announced the suspension of face-to-face classes<\/a><\/span><\/span><span class=\"None\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"> and an alternate operational model on March 13, Residences staff began the planning and execution of moving students out of the residences, which was phase one of the department\u2019s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Phase two was the execution of consolidation of students who would remain in residence, while phase three was accommodating students past the end of exams. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Default\"><span class=\"None\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">The department was also focused on preparing self-isolation units, completing personal protective equipment (PPE) inventory, <\/span><\/span><span class=\"None\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">doing inspections on some of the\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">residence buildings <\/span><span class=\"None\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">and <\/span><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">providing daily (and gradually weekly) updates to Brock\u2019s Emergency Management Group. <\/span><span class=\"None\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Also, some are <\/span><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">packing up their offices<\/span><span class=\"None\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"> as they prepare to relocate <\/span><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">for the next phase of construction for the DeCew renewal project.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Default\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cTo keep our workspace as safe as possible, <\/span><span class=\"None\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">we have done a number of things,\u201d <\/span><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">said Jamie Fleming, Director <\/span><span class=\"None\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">of Residences. \u201cT<\/span><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">he South Service Desk has a plexiglass shield and taped floor to mark off physical distancing space, and the 24\/7 Service Desk is still operating as usual, which requires a full shift rotation. <\/span><span class=\"None\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">As always, there is thorough disinfecting between shifts, and staff that provide residence life response have rotated on-site shifts. Other <\/span><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">staff who are on-site work in separate offices, and several have been set up with a remote desk top and\/or VPN to work from home.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Default\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Everyday, there are between one and five staff members working on-site, with almost every member of the department is working <\/span><span class=\"None\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">on<\/span><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> campus at some point throughout the week. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Default\"><span class=\"None\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Recently<\/span><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">, the department\u2019s focus shifted to concentrate on the plans regarding accommodating the <\/span><span class=\"Hyperlink2\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2020\/05\/brock-opens-its-student-residences-to-health-care-staff\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Niagara Region frontline health-care workers<\/a><\/span><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">. <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Default\"><span class=\"None\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Staff are also doing<\/span><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> all of the usual behind-the-scenes work to prepare for the 2020-21 academic year, like the residence application and admissions cycle, which has been underway for months. <\/span><span class=\"None\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">The added twist for this year is that the staff have been developing scenarios with different occupancy levels and ratios of shared spaces. For example, limiting the number of students per townhouse or number of students per washroom.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Default\"><span class=\"None\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cThe Department of Residences staff is an extremely dedicated group of people,\u201d said Fleming. \u201cThey understand the 24\/7 nature of our work and that we\u2019re an essential service. They rise to meet whatever challenges need to be faced, including the many challenges created by the COVID-19 pandemic.
