{"id":65231,"date":"2020-04-15T08:46:41","date_gmt":"2020-04-15T12:46:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=65231"},"modified":"2024-09-01T09:55:10","modified_gmt":"2024-09-01T13:55:10","slug":"stevens-and-holman-the-nhl-put-profit-ahead-of-players-health-during-last-centurys-pandemic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2020\/04\/stevens-and-holman-the-nhl-put-profit-ahead-of-players-health-during-last-centurys-pandemic\/","title":{"rendered":"STEVENS and HOLMAN: The NHL put profit ahead of players\u2019 health during last century\u2019s pandemic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Julie Stevens, Associate Professor of Sport Management at Brock University, and Andrew Holman, Professor of History at Bridgewater State University, wrote a piece recently published in <em><a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/the-nhl-put-profit-ahead-of-players-health-during-last-centurys-pandemic-135293\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Conversation<\/a><\/em> contrasting the response by various professional hockey leagues to the current COVID-19 pandemic to actions taken a century earlier, when the Stanley Cup could not be awarded due to a global flu pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>They write:<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;If the coronavirus pandemic hadn\u2019t upended the world of sports, the National Hockey League playoffs would be under way now and 16 teams would be fighting for the Stanley Cup.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Instead, the NHL is considering\u00a0a number of different scenarios to try to save its season\u00a0and avoid what happened more than a century ago when a different pandemic prevented players from hoisting the Stanley Cup in victory.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>On April 1, 1919, the Stanley Cup finals were cancelled mid-series because of the\u00a0flu pandemic\u00a0that had ravaged the globe for about a year. Seattle\u2019s Metropolitans, winners of the Pacific Coast Hockey Association (PCHA), and the NHL champion Montr\u00e9al Canadiens had already played five games of a best-of-seven series. The Stanley Cup was never awarded.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0These days, hockey writers retell the peculiar story of the 1919 Stanley Cup as a curious echo of COVID-19 in our own time.
