{"id":64950,"date":"2020-03-27T08:54:06","date_gmt":"2020-03-27T12:54:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=64950"},"modified":"2020-03-27T12:19:14","modified_gmt":"2020-03-27T16:19:14","slug":"international-students-receive-enhanced-support-from-brock","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2020\/03\/international-students-receive-enhanced-support-from-brock\/","title":{"rendered":"International students receive enhanced support from Brock"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">The evolving COVID-19 pandemic has left students with a number of questions, particularly those studying thousands of kilometres away from home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">Brock International kicked off students return to the virtual classroom by offering a number of new initiatives to support them through a transition to online learning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">Earlier this week, the department led a Q&amp;A throughout the day <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/brockuintl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">on their Instagram page<\/a>, offering students answers to many of their burning questions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cWe received an unprecedented number of questions,\u201d said Leigh-Ellen Keating, Director, Brock International. \u201cOur entire department was mobilized to ensure we were able to answer all of the students questions.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">Later that day, Brock International announced a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/B-FsxPnptYU\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">TikTok Dance Competition<\/a> to provide a much-needed distraction for students during the extended period of self-isolation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">The online activities continued on Thursday with a Netflix viewing party. The newly released feature from the streaming service allows groups of people to watch a movie or TV show simultaneously and interact in real time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cStudents were able to comment back and forth about the movie or just how they were feeling,\u201d said Keating. \u201cIt helped create a sense of connection.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">Brock International also implemented a Microsoft Teams group for international students, creating a direct line of communication with their student support staff and an immediate connection to their fellow classmates from around the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">Existing services have also been moved online, such as advice on Immigration and Study Permits, International Mobility, and Academic and Language Support.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">Support specialists have been posting common Q&amp;As on Sakai forums to ensure students are getting the academic support they need in a convenient and accessible way.\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">The most popular topics for international students have been time management, learning strategies, advanced academic terms for writing and APA citations. Upcoming workshops are listed on <a href=\"https:\/\/experiencebu.brocku.ca\/organization\/academic-language-workshops\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ExperienceBU<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">Brock International has also been working with international students who have been displaced as a result of COVID-19, providing accommodation options and space on campus residences where needed. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cThe mental well-being of our students is our top priority,\u201d said Keating. \u201cWe feel a sense responsibility for providing them with a way to stay connected and engaged with the Brock community during this extended period of isolation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">Students that are in need of support during these difficult times or interested in becoming more involved are encouraged to email Brock International Services at <a href=\"mailto:isa@brocku.ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">isa@brocku.ca<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The evolving COVID-19 pandemic has left students with a number of questions, particularly those studying thousands of kilometres away from home.
