{"id":64945,"date":"2020-03-27T07:32:17","date_gmt":"2020-03-27T11:32:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=64945"},"modified":"2024-09-01T09:55:11","modified_gmt":"2024-09-01T13:55:11","slug":"goodman-and-essex-online-voting-entirely-possible-for-mps-during-times-of-crisis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2020\/03\/goodman-and-essex-online-voting-entirely-possible-for-mps-during-times-of-crisis\/","title":{"rendered":"GOODMAN and ESSEX: Online voting entirely possible for MPs during times of crisis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Nicole Goodman, Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science, co-wrote a piece <a href=\"https:\/\/policyoptions.irpp.org\/magazines\/march-2020\/online-voting-entirely-possible-for-mps-during-times-of-crisis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">recently published in Policy Options<\/a> with Aleksander Essex, Associate Professor of software engineering at Western University, about how Canadian MPs could vote securely and remotely during the COVID-19 crisis.<\/p>\n<p>They write:<\/p>\n<p class=\"dropcap-big\"><em>&#8220;The international COVID-19\u00a0pandemic\u00a0has forced many sectors to explore online\u00a0tools to ensure operational continuity during this time of crisis.\u00a0Provincial governments\u00a0in Canada\u00a0have begun releasing online learning platforms to continue to provide students with learning resources\u00a0(Ontario\u2019s <span class=\"TextRun Underlined BCX0 SCXW16886726\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun BCX0 SCXW16886726\">Learn at Home program<\/span><\/span>, for example). In the United States, the New\u00a0York Stock Exchange\u00a0has\u00a0temporarily closed its trading floor in favour of fully electronic trading.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>In such unprecedented times,\u00a0even institutions steeped in tradition must\u00a0consider\u00a0technology.
