{"id":64871,"date":"2020-03-24T10:15:39","date_gmt":"2020-03-24T14:15:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=64871"},"modified":"2020-03-24T20:56:11","modified_gmt":"2020-03-25T00:56:11","slug":"brock-mourns-longtime-economics-professor-emeritus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2020\/03\/brock-mourns-longtime-economics-professor-emeritus\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock mourns longtime Economics Professor Emeritus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"Body\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Brock University is mourning the passing of Lewis Soroka, Professor Emeritus of Economics, who passed away Tuesday, March 17 at the age of 77.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Soroka was born in Montr\u00e9al and attended McGill University. While working on his PhD in Economics, he left Montr\u00e9al and began at Brock as a lecturer teaching courses in microeconomics and public finance. By April of 1969, he had been promoted from a lecturer to an Assistant Professor. <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">After becoming an Assistant Professor, he continued to climb the ranks at Brock. He served as the Chair of the Department of Economics for four years, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences for 10 years and he served on the University Senate and the President\u2019s Task Force on Planning and Priorities. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">In 1995, Soroka was also named the first director of the Centre for Social and Economic Research on Niagara. Soroka, at the time, explained that the Centre\u2019s purpose would be to \u201cdo some basic data and analysis for the development of the Region\u2019s strategic plan.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">During Soroka&#8217;s time at Brock, he went above and beyond to stay involved throughout the University. He was known as the go-to person at Brock to offer expert opinions and perspectives to reporters wanting voices for local or national stories.<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">He taught at Brock for 41 years, from 1967 until his retirement in 2008.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Due to the current health crisis COVID-19, there will be no funeral held at the time.
