{"id":64510,"date":"2020-03-06T14:10:35","date_gmt":"2020-03-06T19:10:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=64510"},"modified":"2020-03-06T15:54:59","modified_gmt":"2020-03-06T20:54:59","slug":"goodman-students-undefeated-at-bi-national-case-competition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2020\/03\/goodman-students-undefeated-at-bi-national-case-competition\/","title":{"rendered":"Goodman students undefeated at bi-national case competition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Weeks of practise paid off for a team of four Goodman School of Business students, who placed first for the second consecutive year in the annual <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">World Trade Center Buffalo Niagara International Case Competition held at Niagara University in Lewiston, New York on Friday, Feb. 28.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Third- and fourth-year Brock University Bachelor of Business Administration students Tyler Bergey, Nimrat <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Bra<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">r, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Sukhwinder<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> Gill and Diana <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Oprea<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> competed together against five other undergraduate university teams from western New York and southern Ontario on a case involving a real-world international trade scenario provided by the American company Moog.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The team was given the case at 5 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 27 and had until 9 a.m. the next day to submit their recommendation. By 2 a.m., the team had a detailed document and presentation prepared on how Moog could expand their digital technology to improve both customer and employee collaboration.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cThe case mentioned that many of the company\u2019s decisions are data focused, so we recommended they incorporate Microsoft Teams,\u201d said Gill. &#8220;Through Teams, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Moog<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"none\">could connect company mobile devices and data terminals with sensors that would allow for seamless distribution of data over digital networks.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The team also conducted several <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">PESTLE<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> (political, environmental, social, technological, legal and economic) analyses to determine which countries would be open to receiving and adapting the technology. They also recommended important skills and experience the company should focus on when training and hiring employees to implement and continue with the new technology.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cOur presentation was spot-on with what the company was already doing,\u201d said <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Brar<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">. \u201cAfter the competition, Moog\u2019s Chief Technology Officer shared that they had begun incorporating Internet of Things, pursuing more internal and external collaboration and ramping up their data collection. I think that was the coolest part \u2013 knowing that our plan was <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">kind of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0right.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Real-world <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">practice<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> is one of several reasons Goodman students participate in case competitions.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cWhat I enjoy most is applying knowledge I learned in classes to real-world scenarios,\u201d said <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Brar<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">. \u201cWe receive immediate feedback from industry professionals, so we get to gauge if our thinking is on the right track. I haven\u2019t worked in an office environment yet, so case competitions are my best way of getting exposure to the inner workings of a company.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">For Gill, case competitions allow him to learn new knowledge and skills outside of the classroom.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cI\u2019ve done several case competitions that are tech-related, which is something I don\u2019t specialize in,\u201d he said. \u201cThe majority of my classes focus on marketing, so participating in case competitions exposes me to digital strategy and new technologies and systems that are <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">moulding<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> the industry<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Goodman Dean Andrew <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Gaudes<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> is proud of the team\u2019s success and encourages other students to get involved with case competitions.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cInternational competitions like this prepare students for the working world by encouraging them to think critically and problem solve, hone their communication skills, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">and demonstrate competence<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> and confidence in their business knowledge.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The team credits their victory to weeks of <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">practise<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> and support from faculty members. Marketing and International Business Strategy <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Instructor <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Kent Walker acted as the team\u2019s coach, curating and creating mock cases, and organizing a dress rehearsal presentation where several professors asked questions and provided feedback to the students. The team was also supported by <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Teighan<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> McIntyre, Goodman\u2019s Student Programming Co-<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ordinator<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cThe questions asked by our professors were very close to what the judges actually asked during the competition question period,\u201d said Gill.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The annual World Trade Center Buffalo Niagara International Case Competition is only one of several case competitions Goodman students have recently experienced success. Earlier this year at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2020\/01\/goodman-students-showcase-learnings-at-major-case-competition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">JDC Central competition<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">, Goodman\u2019s Accounting and Wild Card case teams placed first and the Digital Strategy team took home second.
