{"id":64307,"date":"2020-02-28T14:06:41","date_gmt":"2020-02-28T19:06:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=64307"},"modified":"2020-02-28T15:21:56","modified_gmt":"2020-02-28T20:21:56","slug":"brock-in-search-of-its-next-international-student-ambassadors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2020\/02\/brock-in-search-of-its-next-international-student-ambassadors\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock in search of its next international student ambassadors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">International students, both on campus and around the world, have the chance to share their passion for Brock University as the top destination for higher education.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">Brock is looking for up to 15 outstanding students to participate in the annual <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/ambassadors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">International Student Ambassador Award Program<\/a> for the 2020-21 academic year. The initiative recognizes international students who exemplify the mission and vision of Brock as a result of high academic achievements and\/or community engagement, both on and off campus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cBeing an international student ambassador means that I have the unique chance to represent and promote Brock to students from across the world,\u201d said Antony Gitahi, current international student ambassador from Kenya who\u2019s studying Media and Communications.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_64314\" style=\"width: 511px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-64314\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-64314\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/International_students-14-of-329-1050x699.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"501\" height=\"333\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-64314\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">International Student Ambassador Antony Gitahi from Kenya and Ishita Kapoor from India.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">It also means relief from significant financial burden. Selected students have their international tuition fees reduced to the domestic rate \u2014 a discount of up to $28,000 CAD annually.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">The student ambassadors work with Brock International to meet with prospective students from around the world, highlighting what life is like at the University, both inside and outside of the classroom. They spend time describing life in Niagara, why they chose Brock and how their University experience has helped them prepare for their upcoming career.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cIt has pushed me to be the best version of myself and put my best foot forward every single day,\u201d said Gitahi. \u201cAs I interact with prospective students, they form a perception and image of Brock, which puts a lot of pressure on me to showcase how truly great it is to study here.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>While on campus, ambassadors raise awareness among current students about specialized programs, events and opportunities offered by Brock International.<\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">One of Gitahi\u2019s proudest moments was at Brock\u2019s International Student Orientation on Jan. 5. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cA parent was very nervous and anxious as they prepared to part ways with their child for the first time,\u201d said Gitahi.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_64316\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-64316\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-64316\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Lunch-with-the-President-1050x596.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"284\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-64316\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Brock international student ambasadors for 2019-20 are pictured alongside University President Gervan Fearon after a sit-down lunch.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">He approached the parent and began a conversation, as he understood the source of her anxiety from his own mother being nervous to leave him in a new environment on the other side of the world. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cAfter our brief interaction, she told me she had peace of mind and knew her daughter was in safe hands,\u201d said Gitahi.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">This year\u2019s group of ambassadors even had the opportunity for a sit-down lunch with Brock University President Gervan Fearon, where they discussed several topics they felt were important to the local and global community and shared experiences they&#8217;ve had as an international students and what it\u2019s like adapting to Canadian culture.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Students who want to share their passion for Brock with the world can apply to be an international student ambassador for the 2020-21 academic year.
