{"id":64121,"date":"2020-02-25T08:40:37","date_gmt":"2020-02-25T13:40:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=64121"},"modified":"2020-02-25T08:47:46","modified_gmt":"2020-02-25T13:47:46","slug":"helpful-tips-to-stay-on-your-feet-this-winter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2020\/02\/helpful-tips-to-stay-on-your-feet-this-winter\/","title":{"rendered":"Helpful tips to stay on your feet this winter"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s a scene all too familiar: as you battle your way through the snowstorm from your car to the warmth of the indoors, you\u2019re suddenly flat on the ground \u2014 another victim of the dreaded winter fall.<\/p>\n<p>Personal clumsiness is a risk-factor all year round, but the chance of falling increases in the winter months.<\/p>\n<p>Slips, trips and falls are the number one cause of injury at Brock.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFirst and foremost, slow down and think about your moves and steps,\u201d said Daniel Pozzobon, Occupational Health and Safety Specialist. \u201cYou can also prevent a slip by planning ahead. Check the weather forecast the night before and give yourself extra time if snow is expected for the morning commute.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brian Dzubran, who is also an occupational health and safety specialist, collaborated with Pozzobon to create a\u00a0comprehensive list of tips and tricks to mitigate the slips, trips and falls on campus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t take short cuts through non-pedestrian and non-designated areas,\u201d said Dzurban. \u201cIt may seem obvious, but a good way to prevent an injury is just to pay attention to your surroundings while walking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They also offer further tips to stay injury-free this season:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>avoid texting and walking<\/li>\n<li>don\u2019t rush<\/li>\n<li>keep feet planted shoulder-width apart to stay stable<\/li>\n<li>avoid carrying big objects that limit vision<\/li>\n<li>ditch fancy footwear and opt for appropriate winter footwear<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To report unsafe, slippery conditions call Facilities Management Grounds and Customer Service at 905-688-5500 x3717.
