{"id":64066,"date":"2020-02-19T11:58:27","date_gmt":"2020-02-19T16:58:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=64066"},"modified":"2020-03-02T11:45:33","modified_gmt":"2020-03-02T16:45:33","slug":"university-announces-its-new-dean-of-graduate-studies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2020\/02\/university-announces-its-new-dean-of-graduate-studies\/","title":{"rendered":"University announces its new Dean of Graduate Studies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brock University\u2019s new Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies will be coming from the University of Calgary.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_64068\" style=\"width: 287px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-64068\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-64068\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Suzanne-Curtin-2017.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"277\" height=\"347\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-64068\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Suzanne Curtin<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Suzanne Lea Curtin, who is currently the Associate Dean (Students) in U Calgary\u2019s Faculty of Graduate Studies, is set to take up her new appointment at Brock on July 1, 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Curtin has served as Associate Dean since 2017 and is also a Psychology professor at U Calgary, where she earlier held positions of assistant and associate professor in the Department of Psychology, as well as Linguistics. She previously served as assistant professor at the University of Pittsburgh\u2019s Department of Linguistics.<\/p>\n<p>The announcement was made Wednesday, Feb. 19 by Brock\u2019s Provost and Vice-President Academic Greg Finn, who said the University is pleased to welcome someone with Curtin\u2019s scope of experience in academic, community leadership and administrative roles. Finn also expressed the University\u2019s gratitude to Diane Dupont, who has been serving as Interim Dean of Graduate Studies since January 2018.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProfessor Curtin brings with her a clear understanding of the role of Graduate Studies across the entire University setting,\u201d said Finn. \u201cShe has demonstrated a strong commitment to ensuring that the necessary support and resources are in place for graduate student success, understands the concerns and issues that impact degree completion, and the ability to resolve the many issues faced by graduate students that can impact success.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Besides her academic achievements, Curtin\u2019s other affiliations include serving as a full member of the Alberta Children\u2019s Hospital Research Institute; affiliated member of the Language Sciences initiative at the University of British Columbia; and a board member at the Community Foundation of Southeastern Alberta.<\/p>\n<p>Curtin said she welcomes the opportunity to become part of a university community at an institution that continues to grow its reputation for graduate studies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBrock University is committed to an innovative and transformative vision of graduate education,&#8221; said Curtin. &#8220;I look forward to creating and sustaining partnerships across campus and the community to positively enhance the graduate student experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Curtin\u2019s own research has centred around infant speech perception and lexical development with a recent focus on the interface between early perception and social communication in typically and atypically developing populations.<\/p>\n<p>After graduating from McGill University with an Honours BA in Linguistics (1996), Curtin went on to do graduate work at University of Southern California where she received her MA in Linguistics (1998) and a PhD specializing in Psycholinguistics (2002).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>University of Calgary scholar Suzanne Curtin will become Brock University&#8217;s new Dean of Graduate Studies.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":64070,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[3319,4052,55,1],"tags":[607,3330,4436,8712],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/64066"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=64066"}],"version-history":[{"count":15,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/64066\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":64092,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/64066\/revisions\/64092"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/64070"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=64066"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=64066"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=64066"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
