{"id":63810,"date":"2020-02-06T14:52:16","date_gmt":"2020-02-06T19:52:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=63810"},"modified":"2020-02-07T11:12:38","modified_gmt":"2020-02-07T16:12:38","slug":"human-rights-and-equity-office-film-series-to-prompt-human-rights-discussions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2020\/02\/human-rights-and-equity-office-film-series-to-prompt-human-rights-discussions\/","title":{"rendered":"Human Rights and Equity Film Series to prompt human rights discussions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Wednesday, Feb. 12, the Human Rights and Equity Film Series will present the inspiring and award-winning film <em>Hidden Figures,<\/em>\u00a0loosely based on the non-fiction book of the same name by Margot Lee Shetterly.<\/p>\n<p><em>Hidden Figures<\/em> tells the\u00a0true story about three Black women (played by Octavia Spencer,\u00a0Taraji P. Henson and Janelle Mon\u00e1e) working at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in 1961. The film depicts their difficult rise through NASA&#8217;s ranks as they defy racism and sexism in the STEM field to help launch astronaut John Glenn into orbit and back. <em>Hidden Figures<\/em>\u00a0also features the award-nominated soundtrack collaboration of Pharrell Williams and Hans Zimmer, and was nominated for more than 80 awards including best motion picture and best supporting actress.<\/p>\n<p>The Series was created to bring the Brock University community together to watch movies and discuss themes surrounding Human Rights in Pop Culture.\u00a0Each screening will start at 7 p.m. at Alan Earp Residence &#8211; Community Fireplace\u00a0and end with a casual conversation around how the film portrayed topics such as race, sexuality, ability, gender and more.
