{"id":63772,"date":"2020-02-05T14:00:53","date_gmt":"2020-02-05T19:00:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=63772"},"modified":"2020-02-10T07:50:40","modified_gmt":"2020-02-10T12:50:40","slug":"brock-university-surpasses-united-way-goal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2020\/02\/brock-university-surpasses-united-way-goal\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock surpasses United Way goal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">After months of campaigning, Brock University has surpassed its fundraising goal for United Way.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">On Tuesday, Feb. 4, Brock President <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Gervan<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> Fearon joined the University\u2019s United Way Committee Co-Chairs Lynn McCleary and Sandy Howe in presenting a $172,912 cheque to United Way Niagara Executive Director Frances Hallworth and Director of Resource Development Kevin Jong.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8220;It feels amazing that we\u2019ve hit this goal as a campus community,\u201d said Howe, United Way Committee Co-Chair and Associate Director, Experiential Education. \u201cAs Brock employees, we are privileged in many ways, so it\u2019s important for us to do what we can to support others who may be struggling or disadvantaged.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As one of United Way Niagara\u2019s largest workplace campaigns, Brock&#8217;s donation will count towards the charity\u2019s $5.2 million goal for the Niagara community. Initiatives included targeted department and team presentations, an expanded social media presence through employee donor testimonials and a revamped canvasser program.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cGetting out there and talking with people to face-to-face is where we had the most impact,\u201d said Howe. \u201cBuilding a personal relationship and answering individual questions helped colleagues understand all that United Way accomplishes and how they can be a part of it.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Lynn McCleary, who is also a professor in Brock&#8217;s Department of Nursing, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">feels the personal connection is also why the campaign received more than 50 new gifts from first-time donors and employees who haven\u2019t donated in several years.
