{"id":63471,"date":"2020-01-23T16:22:35","date_gmt":"2020-01-23T21:22:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=63471"},"modified":"2020-01-27T20:34:51","modified_gmt":"2020-01-28T01:34:51","slug":"brock-remains-vigilant-for-coronavirus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2020\/01\/brock-remains-vigilant-for-coronavirus\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock remains vigilant for coronavirus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Updated Jan. 23, 2020<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Brock University officials are closely monitoring information updates regarding the possible spread of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/health-topics\/coronavirus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">coronavirus<\/a>, also known as Wuhan virus, into the Niagara region.<\/p>\n<p>No confirmed cases of coronavirus have been reported in Canada, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagararegion.ca\/health\/Novel-Coronavirus.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Niagara Region Public Health Unit<\/a> reports that <strong>the risk to Niagara residents is low.\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Health Canada has also issued <a href=\"https:\/\/travel.gc.ca\/travelling\/advisories\/pneumonia-china\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">an advisory on the virus<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The virus is a strain of pneumonia that emerged last month in China and has spread to other countries, including the United States, South Korea, Japan and Thailand, carried by travelers. Several hundred people outside of Canada have been infected, and it is the suspected cause of at least 17 deaths in China.<\/p>\n<p>Here in Canada, airports and hospitals are stepping up detection and sanitary measures.<\/p>\n<p>The Niagara Region Public Health Unit is actively monitoring the situation\u00a0and collaborating with local hospitals, emergency services, provincial and national colleagues.<\/p>\n<p>This strain of Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV) is different from the common human coronavirus that circulates seasonally in Niagara.<\/p>\n<p>Brock University will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as required.<\/p>\n<p><strong>About coronavirus<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Coronaviruses are a family of viruses that cause respiratory illnesses.\u00a0 Some cause no or mild illness like a common cold, but other coronaviruses can cause severe illness.<\/p>\n<p>Symptoms include fever, cough and difficulty breathing.<\/p>\n<p>To\u00a0 avoid contracting this and other transmitted illnesses, people should<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>practise good personal hygiene, and wash hands frequently;<\/li>\n<li>avoid touching their mouths with their hands;<\/li>\n<li>if you use a tissue, dispose of it immediately and wash your hands.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The risk of severe disease may be higher for people with a weakened immune system, such as older people or people with chronic disease (for example: diabetes, cancer, heart, renal, or chronic lung disease).<\/p>\n<p>There are no specific treatments for illnesses caused by human coronaviruses. Most people with common human coronavirus illnesses will recover on their own.<\/p>\n<p>Anyone who has travelled to Wuhan, China and developed symptoms of the infection, should avoid contact with others and contact their doctor.
