{"id":63276,"date":"2020-01-16T11:40:05","date_gmt":"2020-01-16T16:40:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=63276"},"modified":"2020-01-17T13:26:29","modified_gmt":"2020-01-17T18:26:29","slug":"brock-pride-week-to-host-10-days-of-celebrations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2020\/01\/brock-pride-week-to-host-10-days-of-celebrations\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock Pride Week to host 10 days of celebrations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brock University is showing its colours with more than a weeks&#8217; worth of activities to help educate, inform and entertain the LGBTQ2+ community and its allies.<\/p>\n<p>While Pride Week is traditionally observed in June globally, Brock decided to host a second week of events during a time when more students are on campus. This year&#8217;s events are taking place\u00a0Saturday, Jan. 18 to Tuesday, Jan. 28, deliberately spanning more than a week.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There is simply too much to pack into four or five days,&#8221; says Leela MadhavaRau, Director of Brock\u2019s Office of Human Rights and Equity (HRE). &#8220;In addition, we want to remind Brock that 2SLGBTQII programs occur year round; while Pride Week is designed to pay particular attention to this community, it is not a one-off.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>She says HRE is committed to taking an active part in campus programming that reinforces the message that Brock is an institution that strives to be inclusive for all.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The programming during Pride Week reinforces the diversity of the 2SLGBTQII community, ensuring the University thinks beyond monolithic stereotypes,&#8221; says MadhavaRau.<\/p>\n<p>People who are interested in learning more about programming offered throughout the year are encouraged to contact Brock Pride, Human Rights and Equity and the Student Justice Centre.<\/p>\n<p>Interested participants are encouraged to share photos of various Brock Pride events online using the hashtag #BrockUPride.<\/p>\n<h2>Brock Pride Week events<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Saturday, Jan. 18<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>We Are The Radical Monarchs Documentary Film Screening<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>4 to 5:30 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>The Film House, 250 St. Paul St., St. Catharines<\/p>\n<p>This film documents the Radical Monarchs \u2014 an alternative to the Scout movement for girls of colour, who earn badges for completing units on social justice including being an LGBTQ ally, the environment, and disability justice.<\/p>\n<p>Cost: Film House Members + Youth (13 and under): $7 | REGULAR: $9.50<\/p>\n<p>Host\/sponsoring groups: The Film House, Niagara Artists Centre, OPIRG Brock, and Brock Student Justice Centre<\/p>\n<p>This event is open to all identities.\u00a0For more information, check the event\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/events\/759667241212655\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Facebook page<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Monday, Jan. 20<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>2SLGBTQ+ Drag Brunch\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>Rankin Family Pavilion, Brock University<\/p>\n<p>Everyone is welcome for hors d&#8217;oeuvres, speakers and a drag performance to kick off Brock 2SLGBTQ+ Pride Week.<\/p>\n<p>Host\/sponsoring groups: SSLGBTQ+ PACHRED group, Office of Human Rights and Equity Services<\/p>\n<p>This event is open to all identities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Free Queer and Trans Concert at Warehouse\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Doors open at 7 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>Warehouse Concert Hall, 11 Geneva St., St. Catharines<\/p>\n<p>Warehouse will host an all Queer and Trans lineup of musicians and performers, featuring Janice Jo Lee, Saint Stone, Jermaine Marshall and Delta Don.<\/p>\n<p>Entry is free, but attendees are encouraged to bring funds for the community raffle.<\/p>\n<p>Host\/sponsoring groups: OPIRG Brock, Student Justice Centre,\u00a0Warehouse\u2019s location is considered physically accessible under AODA standard (there is an alternative accessible entrance)<\/p>\n<p>This event is open to all identities.\u00a0For more information, check the event\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/events\/1369443706566742\/\">Facebook page<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tuesday, Jan. 21<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Brock Pride Custom Flag Making Meet Up<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>7 p.m. to 9 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>Student Justice Centre, TH 252A, Brock University<\/p>\n<p>Join Brock Pride to create a custom flag that represents your identity.<\/p>\n<p>Host\/sponsoring groups: Brock Pride<\/p>\n<p>This event is open to all identities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wednesday, Jan. 22<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Resisting Queerphobia and Transphobia in Everyday Life<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>2 p.m. to 4 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>Student Justice Centre, TH 252A, Brock University<\/p>\n<p>A workshop by Vince Pacilli that focuses on resisting and dismantling institutions, actions, and spaces by which queerphobia and transphobia take place, such as the workplace, academia, &#8216;law&#8217; enforcement, media, etc.<\/p>\n<p>Host\/sponsoring group: OPIRG Brock and Brock Student Justice Centre<\/p>\n<p>This event is open to all identities.<\/p>\n<p>For more information, check out the event\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/events\/2457018031182240\/\">Facebook page<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Niagara Reproductive Justice Crafting Meet Up<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>MW 505, Marilyn I. Walker School of Fine and Performing Arts<\/p>\n<p>A space to meet and organize with other folks passionate about all forms of reproductive justice. Part one will focus on queer fashion history and its evolution, exploring the importance of resistance fashion and its role in revolutionary history. Part two will focus on makeup and how it has been used by the queer community as a form of resistance, gender identity and expression.
