The full-day course will provide leaders with the knowledge and skills needed to participate in effective dialogue with the people they manage, as well as strategies to support employees through the mental health continuum.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A similar half-day workshop for<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">employees <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">of managers who have already taken the course<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">will be offered in the coming <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">months.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cOnce both the manager and their employees receive the training, they can collaboratively put into practice what they\u2019ve each learned,\u201d said Kathryn Walker, Manager, Health Management and Wellness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/experiencebu.brocku.ca\/event\/143004\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Mental Health First Aid \u2014 Youth<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> is a two-day course open to anyone in the Brock community that will help increase participants\u2019 comfort and confidence in working with students and youth aged 12 to 24 experiencing mental health problems, such as anxiety, depression, deliberate self-harm and psychosis. Sessions run from 8:30 to 4:30 <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">on <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Thursday, Jan. 30 and Friday, Jan. 31. Participants must attend both days to receive a certificate of completion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cAlthough the training in focused on youth, much of what is taught can be applied to anyone,\u201d said Walker.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/experiencebu.brocku.ca\/event\/143009\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST)<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> is also a two-day workshop taking place Thursday, Jan. 30 and Friday, Jan. 31 from 8:30 to 4:30. Instructors will teach participants how to prevent suicide by recognizing signs, providing a skilled intervention and developing a safety plan to keep someone <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">alive.<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">Participants must complete both days of training to receive a <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">certificate<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Fennell s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">aid <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">that although many suicide training programs teach how to connect a suicidal person with someone qualified to help, ASIST will prepare participants to directly and immediately help people in crisis.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cUnfortunately, when a person is suicidal, there isn\u2019t always someone available who can help,\u201d she sa<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">id<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. \u201cIf you\u2019re only qualified to make a connection, but there isn\u2019t someone for the person to seek help from, you can\u2019t successfully help the person in crisis.
