{"id":6326,"date":"2010-11-15T10:12:30","date_gmt":"2010-11-15T15:12:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=6326"},"modified":"2010-11-15T10:12:30","modified_gmt":"2010-11-15T15:12:30","slug":"grad-student-and-bug-nerd-studying-carpenter-bees","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2010\/11\/grad-student-and-bug-nerd-studying-carpenter-bees\/","title":{"rendered":"Grad student and &#8216;bug nerd&#8217; studying carpenter bees"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_6327\" style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6327\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6327 \" title=\"Jess Vickruck\" src=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/vickruckweb.jpg\" alt=\"Jess Vickruck\" width=\"480\" height=\"270\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-6327\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jess Vickruck studies bee varieties in a Brock lab.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Jess Vickruck spent a lot of time collecting insects as a kid growing up in Vineland.<\/p>\n<p>Now, she\u2019s spending even more time and travelling thousands of miles to research cryptic species of carpenter bees as a PhD student in Brock\u2019s Biological Sciences program.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCryptic species look identical or nearly identical to another species.\u00a0 They often remain unstudied for that reason,\u201d said Vickruck, who is among six Brock graduate students to receive research funding for 2010-2011 from the Ontario Graduate Scholarships in Science and Technology (OGSST) awards program.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have always been a bug nerd,\u201d Vickruck said. \u201cBeing able to study them as a part of my graduate research has been fantastic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her doctoral work is supervised by Prof. Miriam Richards, who is recognized around the world for her research into the social and ecological attributes of bees.<\/p>\n<p>Vickruck\u2019s thesis work will involve collecting specimens from Ontario to Florida to investigate the nesting biology of cryptic species across their ranges.
