{"id":63250,"date":"2020-01-13T14:36:17","date_gmt":"2020-01-13T19:36:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=63250"},"modified":"2020-01-13T14:36:17","modified_gmt":"2020-01-13T19:36:17","slug":"this-week-at-bufs-parasite-gets-under-your-skin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2020\/01\/this-week-at-bufs-parasite-gets-under-your-skin\/","title":{"rendered":"This week at BUFS, Parasite gets under your skin"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of 2019\u2019s most talked-about films, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5xH0HfJHsaY\">Parasite<\/a><\/em> is coming to the <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/social-sciences\/cpcf\/brock-university-film-series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brock University Film Society<\/a> (BUFS) series on Thursday, Jan. 16 at 7 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>Two families intertwine in this critically acclaimed thriller, one poor but enterprising, the other haplessly unaware of its privilege but willing to pay handsomely for services rendered. They first cross paths when young Ki-woo fakes a college degree to become a tutor to a wealthy teenager\u2014a harmless lie that soon begets another, then another accompanied by subterfuge, and yet another featuring out-and-out sabotage. Some reviewers describe it as a fairy tale, though of the Brothers\u2019 Grimm variety, so consider yourself warned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat the story doesn\u2019t seem particularly interested in, for all its class consciousness and social currency \u2026 is drawing any clean, easy lines between outer wealth and inner worth,\u201d says Leah Greenblatt of <em>Entertainment Weekly<\/em>.\u00a0\u201cBong has more than enough to say about the disconnect between money and meritocracy, the vagaries of family, and the things people do when the social contract is suddenly stripped away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Director Bong Joon-ho gently pointed out that \u201conce you overcome the one-inch\u2013tall barrier of subtitles, you will be introduced to so many more amazing films\u201d when he accepted the Best Motion Picture \u2013 Foreign Language Golden Globe earlier this month. On Monday, he was nominated for an Oscar for Best Director, and the film was nominated for both Best Picture and Best Foreign Language Picture along with Best Original Screenplay, Best Editing and Best Production Design.<\/p>\n<p>Tickets for all BUFS shows are available at the Film House in the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre on the evening of screenings. General admission is $9.50 or $7 for <a href=\"https:\/\/firstontariopac.ca\/Online\/default.asp?BOparam::WScontent::loadArticle::permalink=FilmHouseMembership&amp;BOparam::WScontent::loadArticle::context_id=\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Film House members<\/a>, plus tax.
