{"id":62395,"date":"2019-11-29T11:36:42","date_gmt":"2019-11-29T16:36:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=62395"},"modified":"2019-11-29T11:37:42","modified_gmt":"2019-11-29T16:37:42","slug":"local-hack-day-to-encourage-creativity-and-problem-solving","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2019\/11\/local-hack-day-to-encourage-creativity-and-problem-solving\/","title":{"rendered":"Local Hack Day to encourage creativity and problem solving"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Computer hacking might conjure images of dark basements, hoodies and green Matrix-style code steaming endlessly on computer terminals, digitally lusting for passwords and secrets.<\/p>\n<p>Yet at <a href=\"https:\/\/localhackday.mlh.io\/build\/locations\/2576\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Local Hack Day<\/a> (LHD), happening Sunday, Dec. 1, Brock University&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/brockcsc.ca\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Computer Science Club<\/a> (CSC) from the Faculty of Mathematics and Science invites computer and technology enthusiasts to contribute to the new vision of hacking \u2014 having\u00a0the power to solve challenging problems efficiently through fun and innovative applications, coding and robotics.<\/p>\n<p>Local Hack Day is an event run through the <a href=\"https:\/\/localhackday.mlh.io\/build\/locations\/2576\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Major Hacking League<\/a>, a series of simultaneous global events designed to spark a passion for technology in the local community.<\/p>\n<p>Sammi Mak, one of two CSC Executives along with Kindeep Singh Kargil,\u00a0says the LHD is &#8220;for everyone with a passion for technology,&#8221; and &#8220;designed to make it fun for anyone to join in and start creating.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Event organizers are\u00a0predicting that this year&#8217;s major trends will include augmented and virtual reality, as well as image and speech recognition projects. Students are welcome to bring their own ideas and use workshops and brainstorming sessions to help complete their vision.<\/p>\n<p>The event runs from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m on Sunday in Pond Inlet with pizza, snacks and drinks provided free of charge.
