{"id":6238,"date":"2010-11-10T09:45:23","date_gmt":"2010-11-10T14:45:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=6238"},"modified":"2011-03-11T14:18:56","modified_gmt":"2011-03-11T19:18:56","slug":"niagara-homecoming-for-retired-bank-of-canada-leader","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2010\/11\/niagara-homecoming-for-retired-bank-of-canada-leader\/","title":{"rendered":"Niagara homecoming for retired Bank of Canada leader"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_6239\" style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6239\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6239 \" title=\"Philip Kitchen and Paul Jenkins\" src=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/pauljenkins.jpg\" alt=\"Dean of Business Philip Kitchen, left, chats with Paul Jenkins at the Brock-organized event.\" width=\"480\" height=\"270\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-6239\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dean of Business Philip Kitchen, left, chats with Paul Jenkins at the Brock-organized event.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Look in your wallet or purse and you&#8217;ll see Paul Jenkins\u2019 signature on any Canadian bank notes printed since 2003.<\/p>\n<p>But on Nov. 4, you could see Jenkins himself \u2014 recently retired as Senior Deputy Governor of the Bank of Canada \u2014 in his native St. Catharines, chatting about topics ranging from potash sales to Canada\u2019s recovery from the Great Recession and fiscal implications of the recent U.S. elections.<\/p>\n<p>The occasion was a casual social event at the Quality Inn Parkway Convention Centre, organized by Brock <a href=\"\/business\" target=\"_blank\">Faculty of Business<\/a> alumni and attended by about 60 people, including members of the local business community.<\/p>\n<p>Jenkins \u2014 who attended Sir Winston Churchill Secondary School in the 1960s before going on to become one of Canada\u2019s most informed economists \u2014 delivered some brief remarks, answered questions and shared his thoughts on the country\u2019s economic past and the road it must take in the future.<\/p>\n<p>A key reason Canada fared better than Britain or the U.S. in the recent recession is that Canada\u2019s regulated banks are held to higher standards of stability and quality than in many other countries, he said. As the global economy continues a modest recovery, the new economic order will see more robust growth in emerging economies.<\/p>\n<p>But opportunities await Canada, particularly regions like Niagara, he said.
