{"id":62239,"date":"2019-11-20T12:30:20","date_gmt":"2019-11-20T17:30:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=62239"},"modified":"2019-11-20T17:13:36","modified_gmt":"2019-11-20T22:13:36","slug":"brock-reducing-slips-one-step-at-a-time","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2019\/11\/brock-reducing-slips-one-step-at-a-time\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock reducing slips one step at a time"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Winter weather is notorious for contributing to slips, trips and falls.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The rain, ice, snow, slush and mud make for difficult walking surfaces<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and debris is often tracked inside onto smooth floors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">One way<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> Brock University is helping to prevent injury is by increasing <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the number of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">loor mats it uses during the winter months. Seven<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> mats have been added to high-traffic entrances, such as Mackenzie Chown Block J, the south and west sides of the Cairns Family Health and Bioscience Research Complex and the vestibule in Plaza Building near the Campus Store<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, bringing the total number of mats across campus to 163.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Augmenting the new floor mats is more frequent maintenance through vacuuming and deep cleaning.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The most significant improvement, however, is increasing the <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">size of many mats.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cBelieve it or not, there&#8217;s a science behind entrance mats,\u201d said Jay <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Ismailovic<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, Manager, Custodial Services. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cAccording to standards set by the Carpet and Rug Institute, each foot must <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">make contact with<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> a mat three times for it to successfully remove 85 to 95 per cent of debris from footwear. This means our mats need to be a minimum of 12 to 15 feet long, but we\u2019re aiming to do better.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Occupational Health and Safety Specialist Daniel Pozzobon said that slips, trips and falls are the top reported incident on campus and that improving Brock\u2019s already successful floor mat program is one step to prevent injuries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cMats are quite effective at absorbing water and collecting debris; however, faculty, staff and students can do their part in preventing slips by brushing off debris from pant legs and <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">footwear and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> shaking off water from umbrellas and jackets before entering a building.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Pozzobon also suggests being mindful of slippery surfaces by walking at a safe pace, avoiding areas that may be icy, muddy or wet, and wearing footwear appropriate for the outdoor conditions, such as boots and shoes with deep tread.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cSlippers, flip flops, high heels and smooth-soled footwear can be dangerous to wear when walking in snow, ice and wet conditions,\u201d said Pozzobon. \u201cMany of us change our car tires in the winter so we have more grip, so why not change our shoes?\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">To report unsafe conditions Monday to Friday between 7:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., call Facilities Management Customer Service One Call Hotline at x3717. Outside of these hours, or if the University is closed, unsafe conditions can be reported to Campus Security at x3200.
