Willem Dafoe\u2019s Wake warns young Winslow (Robert Pattinson) early on that the previous assistant went mad. Under the pressure of fierce isolation, impossibly close living quarters, his eccentric taskmaster, an antagonistic seabird, nagging mermaid fantasies, and never-ceasing wind \u2014 from both the sea and Wake himself \u2014 it seems Winslow may not be able to avoid a similar fate.<\/p>\n<p>Glen Weldon of NPR calls director Robert Eggers \u201ca filmmaker fascinated with the place where hardship meets hallucination, where the punishments of the natural world intersect the world of the mind,\u201d adding that the director \u201calso knows that for viewers to follow him where he&#8217;s going, he needs to anchor us in strong, clarifying performances.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He does so with noted success \u2014 Dafoe and Pattinson have been showered with acclaim for their performances, and Eggers received the Cannes Film Festival critics\u2019 award for best first or second feature.<\/p>\n<p>Tickets for all BUFS shows are available at the Film House in the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre (PAC) on the evening of screenings. General admission is $9.50 or $7 for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/firstontariopac.ca\/Online\/default.asp?BOparam::WScontent::loadArticle::permalink=FilmHouseMembership&amp;BOparam::WScontent::loadArticle::context_id=\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Film House members<\/a>, plus tax.
