{"id":62050,"date":"2019-11-18T16:06:40","date_gmt":"2019-11-18T21:06:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=62050"},"modified":"2019-11-18T19:14:06","modified_gmt":"2019-11-19T00:14:06","slug":"unconventional-journey-leads-omalley-speaker-to-brock","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2019\/11\/unconventional-journey-leads-omalley-speaker-to-brock\/","title":{"rendered":"Unconventional journey leads O&#8217;Malley speaker to Brock"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Being invited to speak at the 19th annual Terry O&#8217;Malley lecture made Dave Lafond do a lot of thinking.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I still feel like this young guy who&#8217;s trying to make it in his career,&#8221; said Lafond,\u00a0<span data-contrast=\"auto\">Advertising Executive and Co-Founder of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nofixedaddressinc.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">No Fixed Address<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, Nov. 14, he spoke about the twists and turns he&#8217;s experienced as an entrepreneur in his lecture, \u201cBuilt from Scratch: An Entrepreneur\u2019s Journey,\u201d where he shared how he advanced from\u00a0account executive to agency president to starting his own agency.<\/p>\n<p>The free event, held at Brock University&#8217;s <span data-contrast=\"auto\">Sean O\u2019Sullivan Theatre, caused Lafond to reflect on his own university experience, where he felt &#8220;a world away&#8221; from his classmates.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I grew up in northern Ontario, and I was going to school\u00a0with people from Toronto whose parents worked in corporate,&#8221; said Lafond. &#8220;I swept floors.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>After graduating, many of his classmates immediately went into corporate jobs at big brands and consulting firms.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I took a job at Xerox selling photocopyers,&#8221; said Lafond. &#8220;I needed the money because I had $72,000 of school debt. It was 1998.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He says it wasn&#8217;t until he got into advertising that he discovered his risk-taking tendencies.\u00a0During his early years at an agency called Publicis, Lafond had two mentors \u2014 one of whom would end up having a major impact on both his personal and professional life.<\/p>\n<p>Serge Rancourt is now Lafond&#8217;s business partner, who hired Lafond&#8217;s now-wife, Rachel, during their time at Publicis. Shortly after she started, Rancourt commented on her engagement ring and asked, &#8220;What&#8217;s with the ring on your finger?<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_62175\" style=\"width: 433px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-62175\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-62175\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Lafond2-1050x700.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"423\" height=\"282\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-62175\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dave Lafond talks about meeting his wife, Rachel.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>She said she was engaged to a man named Michael, and Rancourt said, &#8220;You&#8217;re going to marry Dave Lafond.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Sure enough, he was right.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I got the ring off her finger and we got married and had a kid within a year,&#8221; said Lafond.<\/p>\n<p>It was another twist that landed him exactly where he wanted to be.<\/p>\n<p>Lafond joined the multinational advertising and public relations company Publicis in 2001. In 2007, he launched Publicis Modem, a digital agency which grew to a team of more than 120.<\/p>\n<p>In 2011, he<span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0became president of Proximity\/BBDO Canada, and in 2013, he joined Cossette, one of Canada\u2019s largest independent agencies, as president of English Canada. In 2016, Lafond launched No Fixed Address with CEO and Co-Founder Serge <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Rancourt<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Getting started is hard,&#8221; said Lafond. &#8220;Going linear isn&#8217;t part of the process. If I reach a couple students like me that were super lost, that would be success for me. I remember when I was young in university, I had no career path. I graduated without a job. You don&#8217;t know where your journey&#8217;s going to take you.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Earlier in the day, Brock students competed\u00a0in the<span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/social-sciences\/cpcf\/marketing-and-advertising-competition-and-lecture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Grant Dobson Case Competition<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, hosted by Brock&#8217;s Department of Communication, Popular Culture and Film. Cheyenne Mensah, a fourth-year Business Communications student, and Janelle Marshall, a third-year student Media Communications student, took home first prize.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_62176\" style=\"width: 420px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-62176\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-62176\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Lafond3-1050x700.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"410\" height=\"273\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-62176\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cheyenne Mensah (left) and Janelle Marshall (right) won this year&#8217;s Grant Dobson Case Competition.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Mensah<\/span>\u00a0ended up sharing snippets of her life story with Lafond, captivating him.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I was born in Ghana and moved to Germany when I was two to live with my grandparents,&#8221; said <span data-contrast=\"auto\">Mensah<\/span>. &#8220;I grew up being more rooted within German culture than I did in my own African culture, so when I left around six and came to Canada, I was on and off between Canada and Germany.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Mensah<\/span>\u00a0said adapting to Canadian culture was difficult for the first few years, but it&#8217;s a triumph woven into her journey.<\/p>\n<p>Her and Marshall&#8217;s project, Bright Blue, was a yearlong campaign to get Canadians aged 18 to 24 cleaning shorelines. The pair used social media and influencers, as well as post-secondary advocates, to get involved and inspire others to participate in cleaning shorelines.<\/p>\n<p>During Lafond&#8217;s address, he talked about <span data-contrast=\"auto\">Mensah<\/span>&#8216;s inspiring story \u2014 now woven into his own.<\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Mensah<\/span>\u00a0said the unexpected attention was both &#8220;amazing and scary.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;After the initial fear went away, I was like, &#8216;Wow, he remembers the stuff we talked about,'&#8221; said <span data-contrast=\"auto\">Mensah<\/span>. &#8220;I felt important.
