{"id":61842,"date":"2019-11-04T17:52:05","date_gmt":"2019-11-04T22:52:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=61842"},"modified":"2019-11-05T09:32:03","modified_gmt":"2019-11-05T14:32:03","slug":"annual-brock-conference-zooms-in-on-canadian-screens","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2019\/11\/annual-brock-conference-zooms-in-on-canadian-screens\/","title":{"rendered":"Annual Brock conference zooms in on Canadian Screens"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Canadian screens have seen a lot of changes since 2006.<\/p>\n<p>YouTube just celebrated its first birthday, having launched in April 2005, and Netflix was still a DVD rental service (it didn&#8217;t start streaming until 2007, the same year that the first iPhone was released).<\/p>\n<p>From Nov. 8 to 9, Brock University is hosting the 32nd annual Two Days of Canada conference, welcoming\u00a0scholars from disciplines and institutions across the country to take a closer look at Canadian Screens.<\/p>\n<p>The conference topic is a throwback to the 2006 conference theme, Canadian Television, which inspired the publication of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wlupress.wlu.ca\/Books\/C\/Canadian-Television2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Canadian Television: Text and Context<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe context of conventional television has shifted dramatically in the last 13 years,\u201d says Marian Bredin, Director of the MA in Canadian-American Studies and Professor of Communication, Popular Culture and Film. \u201cToday, we experience an incredible diversity of televisual texts and contexts across multiple sites and screens.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bredin says the conference will examine how content is \u201cproduced, consumed, interpreted, circulated and regulated across these various screen spaces.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>All conference panels are open to students, staff and faculty, including Friday\u2019s keynote address by Janine Marchessault, a Professor in the School of the Arts, Media, Performance and Design at York University.<\/p>\n<p>Marchessault will speak about her project <a href=\"https:\/\/counterarchive.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Archive\/Counter-Archive: Activating Canada\u2019s Moving Image Heritage<\/a> in her address, titled \u201cLiving Archives: Recent Curatorial Approaches to Mediated History.\u201d The presentation takes place Friday at 7:30 p.m. in Thistle Complex 248.<\/p>\n<p>The interdisciplinary conference is hosted by the Centre for Canadian Studies at Brock and supported by departments and centres from the Faculties of Humanities and Social Sciences.
