The Brock University Library is among more than a dozen Ontario universities launching a new academic search tool, beginning\u00a0<\/span>Dec<\/span>.<\/span> 10<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Introduced <\/span>Wednesday, Oct. 30 as Omni<\/a><\/span>, the new library system is an outcome of the Ontario Council of University Libraries (OCUL)\u2019s Collaborative Futures initiative<\/span>. <\/span>Omni<\/span> replaces a<\/span> number<\/span> of legacy library systems<\/span>, improves the <\/span>searching and <\/span>discovery e<\/span>xperience, and<\/span> will create seamless access across <\/span>14 Ontario university library collections.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>The name Omni<\/span> mean<\/span>s<\/span> everything,<\/span>\u201d<\/span> said Nicole Nolan<\/span>, <\/span>who is Brock\u2019s implementation lead.<\/span> \u201cI<\/span>t is <\/span>a <\/span>fitting <\/span>name <\/span>f<\/span>or<\/span> our<\/span> new search tool <\/span>because <\/span>it<\/span> expresses the breadth of<\/span> resources that <\/span>users will have access to<\/span>. <\/span>Omni will <\/span>transform<\/span> how <\/span>faculty, <\/span>re<\/span>s<\/span>earchers, s<\/span>tud<\/span>ents and community members <\/span>will<\/span> search, discover<\/span> and access <\/span>resources.<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Omni will provide a<\/span> streamlined, intuitive and mobile-friendly experience,\u00a0<\/span>as well as<\/span> access<\/span> to <\/span>a vast <\/span>collection of<\/span> scholarly resources, including<\/span> journal articles<\/span>, databases, videos, music <\/span>and<\/span> a<\/span> shared collection of <\/span>print books<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>Libraries in Ontario universities are seeking ways to improve their support for faculty and students<\/span>,\u201d <\/span>said Mark Robertson, who chaired the OCUL branding working group.<\/span> \u201c<\/span>This initiative<\/span> draws its strength from <\/span>the collective <\/span>talent from across Ontario\u2019s academic libraries. <\/span>The Brock community<\/span> will have unprecedented access to <\/span>scholarly materials <\/span>through Omni <\/span>and will benefit from a <\/span>modernized <\/span>library platform<\/span>. <\/span>Because Omni is directly connected to Ontario university libraries, users can trust that the research material they’re accessing is high-quality, authoritative and appropriate for use in academic <\/span>endeavours<\/span>.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Adoption of a new platform to manage all library services and resources is a significant <\/span>p<\/span>roject <\/span>that only happens every 20 to 25 years.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>As with any transition of this scale, we anticipate there will be a few bumps and we will be ready to manage and resolve issues as they are identified<\/span>,\u201d said Nolan.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On Dec. 10, Omni will replace the Brock Library\u2019s current SuperSearch <\/span>and catalogue <\/span>systems, with a<\/span>dditional <\/span>features<\/span>\u00a0expected in <\/span>2020. <\/span>U<\/span>pdates will be posted on the <\/span>Brock Library website<\/span><\/a>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
