Whatever the case, their eyes are busy scanning a screen and not looking ahead of them in the direction their body is moving. This distracted <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">behaviour<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> sometimes ends in a collision with another person, structure or vehicle, and may result in injury.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cRecently<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> a person needed to get stitches in her head <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">from <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">walking <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">into a metal pole while looking at her phone,\u201d said Dan Pozzobon, Occupational Health and Safety Specialist. \u201cWe also had a close call with a person who walked out in front of a car at a crosswalk without looking to see if it was safe to cross.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Although most distracted walking incidents aren\u2019t this serious, they\u2019re prevalent. They often result in a minor collision that isn\u2019t reported, or a slip, trip or fall, which accounts for 25 per cent of reported incidents on campus, making it the No. 1 reason why people at Brock get hurt.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Brian <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Dzurban<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, Pozzobon\u2019s <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Occupational Health and Safety Specialist<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> colleague, acknowledges that it will take time for people to change their habits but hopes the next time they&#8217;re faced with the opportunity to text and <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">walk,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> they&#8217;ll think twice.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It seems easy and quick to <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">use your phone on the move<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">but an incident can happen in a second.
