{"id":61587,"date":"2019-10-25T12:35:55","date_gmt":"2019-10-25T16:35:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=61587"},"modified":"2019-10-25T14:33:54","modified_gmt":"2019-10-25T18:33:54","slug":"library-announces-award-for-open-access-recipients","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2019\/10\/library-announces-award-for-open-access-recipients\/","title":{"rendered":"Library announces Award for Open Access recipients"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In his introductory course for the Faculty of Education\u2019s\u00a0Adult Education program, Associate Professor of Educational Studies Robert McGray encourages his students to gather journal articles and other online resources to share with the rest of the class.<\/p>\n<p>The idea is for the group to create a free and accessible course pack of materials that will live longer than the class.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe students will be able to use these resources in perpetuity in their own professional work,\u201d says McGray, whose course is geared towards mature learners who are already working in the adult education field.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_61600\" style=\"width: 427px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-61600\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-61600\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Robert1-1050x695.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"417\" height=\"276\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-61600\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Associate Professor of Educational Studies Robert McGray.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s like crowdsourcing a large amount of scholarly material that is put into a repository. When class members are no longer Brock students, they can go back to that repository and download articles with annotations on them about designing courses for adults.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Professor of Health Sciences Ana Sanchez conducts primary field and laboratory research on neglected parasitic diseases such as soil-transmitted helminths and tapeworm parasites of humans and pigs.<\/p>\n<p>Much of her work focusses on how these diseases affect communities (and in particular, children), mainly in Honduras.<\/p>\n<p>She openly shared the results of her research into neglected parasitic diseases with researchers, practitioners and policy makers in Honduras and around the world.<\/p>\n<p>For their efforts, Sanchez and McGray have jointly received the 2019<a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/library\/teach-publish\/open-access\/award\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Brock University Award for Open Access<\/a>, which recognizes a Brock community member who is a champion of freely sharing scholarship with audiences around the globe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSanchez and McGray have each made tremendous contributions in all the areas cited in the award criteria, including sharing their scholarship openly, participating in open access journals and advocating for open access to research and educational resources,\u201d says Elizabeth Yates, Brock\u2019s Liaison and Scholarly Communication Librarian.\u00a0\u201cBoth of these scholars are dedicated to advancing knowledge as a public good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Open access publications \u201care immediately available to anybody, anywhere, with no fee to the end user,\u201d says Yates.<\/p>\n<p>That is a concept dear to Sanchez.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOpen access \u2013 publishing in scientific journals that are not behind a pay wall \u2013 is in exact alignment with my principles of sharing knowledge and technology to advance science everywhere,\u201d says Sanchez. \u201cI&#8217;m very happy and honoured to receive this award.\u00a0Open access is about equity and fairness and I feel a great responsibility to share my research findings.
