{"id":61134,"date":"2019-10-07T15:16:35","date_gmt":"2019-10-07T19:16:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=61134"},"modified":"2019-10-08T12:33:29","modified_gmt":"2019-10-08T16:33:29","slug":"brock-welcomes-palestinian-refugee-through-charitable-foundation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2019\/10\/brock-welcomes-palestinian-refugee-through-charitable-foundation\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock welcomes Palestinian refugee through charitable foundation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">As a third-generation refugee from Palestine living in Lebanon, Waed Hasan knew that if she wanted to pursue higher education, she was going to need support.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cI was one of the lucky ones that got to go to good schools, but we were not of economic status that would have allowed me to go to a good university in Lebanon,\u201d said Hasan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>She started looking at scholarships catering to\u00a0Palestinian\u00a0refugees, one of which was the <a href=\"https:\/\/daughtersforlife.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Daughters for Life Foundation<\/a>. The foundation provides scholarships and awards for young women of any Middle Eastern nationality, regardless of their religion, ethnicity or background, to enable them to pursue studies that would otherwise be inaccessible.<\/p>\n<p>The foundation\u00a0is\u00a0<span lang=\"EN-US\">led by Nobel Prize nominee Dr. Izzeldin Abuelaish, a Palestinian physician and renowned peace activist, who created the organization after three of his daughters were killed in Gaza in 2009. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">Brock University&#8217;s initial <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/11\/brock-funds-additional-daughters-for-life-scholarships\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">agreement with Daughters for Life Foundation<\/a>\u00a0was signed by former University President Jack Lightstone <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">in 2016. That same year, Abuelaish was given an honorary doctorate from Brock.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">Both Hasan and the Daughters for Life Foundation believe that creating lasting peace in the Middle East depends on the empowerment of girls and young women through education.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cThe only form of empowerment you have, specifically as a female refugee, is education,\u201d said Hasan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Her post-secondary education started when Daughters for Life accepted her application for undergraduate studies at Manhattanville College in New York, where she graduated <span lang=\"EN-US\">summa cum laude in 2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">During her undergraduate degree, Hasan became an avid writer, where she &#8220;started to pursue things as a writer that I would not have done back home.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">She also presented at two national writing conferences, served as the co-managing editor of a newsletter and was published with\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">Z Publishing House and the Ocotillo Review.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>After graduation, Hasan was determined to pursue her master&#8217;s degree in English.
