{"id":61009,"date":"2019-10-02T16:20:57","date_gmt":"2019-10-02T20:20:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=61009"},"modified":"2019-10-02T16:37:59","modified_gmt":"2019-10-02T20:37:59","slug":"holistic-approach-defines-distinguished-scholars-work","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2019\/10\/holistic-approach-defines-distinguished-scholars-work\/","title":{"rendered":"Holistic approach defines Distinguished Scholar&#8217;s work"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"Body\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">The phrase \u2018Houston, we have a problem\u2019 often conjures how the U.S. government&#8217;s\u00a0<\/span>National Aeronautics and Space Administration (<span lang=\"EN-US\">NASA) and a crew of three astronauts aboard the Apollo 13 spacecraft safely returned to Earth after an oxygen tank exploded.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Both the mainstream media and NASA framed the mission as a huge success when the crew touched down in the Pacific Ocean six days after launching in 1970. However, Dave <\/span><span lang=\"NL\">Bouckenooghe<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">, Associate Professor in Goodman\u2019s Department of Organizational Behaviour, Human Resources, Entrepreneurship and Ethics, questions whether it was actually an example of corporate failure. After all, the spaceflight was supposed to land on the moon without any issues.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"NL\">Bouckenooghe&#8217;s<\/span>\u00a0prolific work has earned him Goodman\u2019s Distinguished Scholar of the Year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Despite having received numerous career accolades, <span lang=\"NL\">Bouckenooghe said this award is especially meaningful.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cYou\u2019re always trying to work hard and do your best,&#8221; he said<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">. &#8220;If you\u2019re persistent about what you\u2019re doing, it will pay off.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">NASA has failed at several space missions since 1970, and looking at the data, <\/span><span lang=\"NL\">Bouckenooghe<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">, who studies organizational behaviour and psychology, says there\u2019s a reason for that.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cIt appears they didn\u2019t learn from these failures,\u201d he said. \u201cInstead, they have constantly reframed failure as success and created a climate where failure became institutionalized.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"NL\">Bouckenooghe says that NASA isn&#8217;t alone, and that the paradox of failure plagues other organizations as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cThe main stream of thinking is, \u2018What can we learn from failure?'&#8221; said\u00a0<span lang=\"NL\">Bouckenooghe.<\/span><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0&#8220;<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">A lot of organizations regularly encounter failure, creating conditions for the failure to persist and become embedded in the organization\u2019<\/span><span lang=\"PT\">s culture. <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">T<\/span><span lang=\"IT\">he question <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">then becomes, &#8216;How can you turn around that kind of detrimental thinking?&#8217;\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>While\u00a0<span lang=\"NL\">Bouckenooghe<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u2019s research into organizational failure is a future project, his previous research about other issues of the corporate psyche, including workplace bullying, the relationship between employee entitlement and ethics, and leadership and job performance, has spawned a long list of papers published in some of the world\u2019s most prestigious academic journals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\"><span lang=\"NL\">Bouckenooghe\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">takes a helicopter view of how organizations work when quantitatively researching a behaviour or issue. That holistic approach enables him to answer questions that will ultimately benefit businesses. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\"><span lang=\"NL\">He\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">was drawn to academia after briefly working as a consultant and feeling dissatisfied with the results, saying that academic research gives him the opportunity to have real impact.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cWhen you\u2019re in the world of consulting, you always intend to reinvent the wheel,&#8221; said <span lang=\"NL\">Bouckenooghe<\/span>. &#8220;You\u2019re relying on models that have been around a long time. I wasn\u2019t really satisfied with this approach. You\u2019re not really helping companies except for treating symptomatic issues.
