{"id":60057,"date":"2019-09-03T16:31:31","date_gmt":"2019-09-03T20:31:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=60057"},"modified":"2021-10-04T13:20:00","modified_gmt":"2021-10-04T17:20:00","slug":"new-brock-institute-to-support-economic-growth-in-niagara","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2019\/09\/new-brock-institute-to-support-economic-growth-in-niagara\/","title":{"rendered":"New Brock institute to support economic growth in Niagara"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A $5-million investment by the federal government will allow Brock University to create a landmark facility aimed at making Niagara a research and innovation leader in bioagriculture, bioscience and chemical manufacturing sectors.<\/p>\n<p>The FedDev funding through the Community Economic Development and Diversification stream was announced Tuesday, Sept. 3 by Niagara Centre MP Vance Badawey and St. Catharines MP Chris Bittle.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_60062\" style=\"width: 370px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/IMG_6957.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-60062\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-60062\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/IMG_6957.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"285\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-60062\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Brock President Gervan Fearon speaks to the crowd at the funding announcement.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The funding means Brock can now launch the <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/vpmi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brock-Niagara Validating, Prototyping and Manufacturing Institute (VPMI)<\/a> which will enable area businesses to access the University\u2019s researchers, expertise and advanced technology. The new centre will be housed in a $6.1-million expanded facility, which is expected to open in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Brock University President Gervan Fearon said the visionary facility will make the Niagara community a Canadian leader in university-engaged collaborative research and innovation that enhances advances and the competitiveness of the manufacturing and agri-food sectors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are grateful for the Government of Canada supporting this strategic initiative that helps to build the regional economic cluster of the Niagara region and supports the competitiveness of industry across Canada,\u201d said Fearon. \u201cThe VPMI will support applied research and development, innovation and commercialization efforts to help businesses grow and thrive. It will play an important role in Brock University\u2019s strategic priority to partner with business and communities in supporting the prosperity and vitality of the Niagara region and beyond.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The VPMI will be comprised of three main components: research and innovation; testing and prototyping; and training. It will expand on existing partnerships created through Brock\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/advanced-biomanufacturing-centre\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Advanced Biomanufacturing Centre<\/a> (ABC), <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/ccovi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cool Climate Oenology and Viticulture Institute<\/a> (CCOVI) and the <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/linc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BrockLINC<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The VPMI will give businesses access to state-of-the-art analytical, prototyping and early-stage manufacturing tools, as well as to expertise and training, to help expand and tackle new markets.
