{"id":59837,"date":"2019-08-26T11:31:58","date_gmt":"2019-08-26T15:31:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=59837"},"modified":"2020-01-28T16:08:05","modified_gmt":"2020-01-28T21:08:05","slug":"brock-celebrates-as-oldest-fitness-participant-turns-99","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2019\/08\/brock-celebrates-as-oldest-fitness-participant-turns-99\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock celebrates as oldest fitness participant turns 99"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After routinely hitting the gym three times a week, Chuck Page has earned the right to have his cake and eat it too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And that\u2019s just what the regular at the Brock-Niagara Centre for Health and Well-Being was treated to when he celebrated his 99th birthday on Aug. 9.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chuck, the centre\u2019s oldest participant, blew out the candles, enjoyed a big slice of chocolate cake and then got back to breaking a sweat.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_59845\" style=\"width: 474px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-59845\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-59845\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Chuck-Page-birthday-1050x786.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"464\" height=\"347\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-59845\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A photo of Chuck Page blowing out the candles on his 99th birthday cake has been viewed by more than 11,000 people after being posted to social media by granddaughter Jessica Page.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He\u2019s never been one to miss a beat, said centre co-ordinator Katherine Crockett. Even when a hairline shoulder fracture kept him temporarily out of the gym earlier this year, he was determined to get back on the machines.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chuck\u2019s connection to Brock began 14 years ago when he saw a call in a local newspaper for participants in a University study. Associate Professor of Kinesiology Kim Gammage was evaluating whether exercise could improve balance in seniors and Chuck, who was doing no exercise other than walking at the time, was intrigued by the concept.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He signed up, saw the study through and has been a regular at the gym ever since.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The St. Catharines resident has been a real inspiration for other clients at the centre, Katherine said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSo many of them say, \u2018I hope I\u2019m still working out and doing chest presses at 99,\u2019\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s great motivation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chuck believes his exercise routine has played a big role in his health as he approached his later years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI think that\u2019s why I\u2019m 99 and still going,\u201d he said. \u201cEven a little bit of exercise makes a big difference as you age.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His granddaughter, orthopedic surgeon Dr. Jessica Page, has been using his story and connection to Brock to help motivate her own clients in Lethbridge, Alta.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMany patients have excuses as to why it\u2019s too difficult: \u2018My joints are too sore,\u2019 \u2018I don\u2019t have enough time,\u2019 or \u2018it\u2019s hard to get around,\u2019\u201d she said. \u201cI think my grandpa is a good example of how those barriers can be overcome and what the benefits are if you can overcome them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere\u2019s good evidence that 150 minutes of exercise a week for adults, with at least two days of strength training, has effects on cardiovascular disease risks, cancer risks and overall mortality.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_59844\" style=\"width: 442px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-59844\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-59844\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Chuck-Page-99-years-old-7-RS-1050x720.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"432\" height=\"296\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-59844\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Chuck Page, 99, works out at the Brock-Niagara Centre for Health and Well-Being alongside his son Rick Page, left, and centre co-ordinator Katherine Crockett, centre.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jessica shared a photo of her grandfather blowing out his candle on Twitter to help get the #medicinethroughmovement message out into the world and it has been viewed by more than 11,000 people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even Chuck\u2019s own son has been moved by his gym journey.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHe\u2019s an inspiration,\u201d said Rick Page, who has also begun working out at the centre during a month-long visit from B.C.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI had to come in and watch his routine first to make sure I could keep up,\u201d the 65-year-old quipped.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chuck is happy to be able to offer a bit of encouragement to get people moving.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSometimes all they need is a little motivation and then they take off and are glad they got started,\u201d he said. \u201cThat\u2019s the hard part, getting started.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Working out at the Brock-Niagara Centre for Health and Well-Being, which allows seniors to use the space for a minimal membership fee, offers more than physical benefits, Katherine said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s the social aspect of it as well.
