{"id":59731,"date":"2019-08-20T13:46:30","date_gmt":"2019-08-20T17:46:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=59731"},"modified":"2019-08-20T15:48:38","modified_gmt":"2019-08-20T19:48:38","slug":"brock-expanding-support-program-to-assist-new-students-this-fall","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2019\/08\/brock-expanding-support-program-to-assist-new-students-this-fall\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock expanding support program to assist new students this fall"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As they arrive on campus this September, new Brock students will have access to more assistance than ever to keep them on track during their first semester.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thanks to<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/11\/retention-grants-spread-across-the-university\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">funding from BU 4U Retention and Graduation Grants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a team of 20 student staff members will be on campus to answer a variety of inquiries through the newly rebranded Stay Smart\/Ask Me booths.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe first few days at university can be both exhilarating and intimidating at the same time,\u201d said Kara Kelly, Brock\u2019s Manager of Recruitment Operations and Communication. \u201cWe want to provide a warm welcome for our new students and help them feel like part of our Brock community.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Guided by feedback from students who previously completed the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/discover.brocku.ca\/start\/#smart-start-info\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smart Start program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Brock\u2019s recruitment team has retained its summer staff to assist new students with questions as the Fall Term commences and to serve as familiar faces for this summer&#8217;s nearly 2,000 Smart Start orientation participants.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSeveral studies have shown the first six weeks of school are a critical transition period,\u201d said Kelly. \u201cWe want our students to feel comfortable in their new environment and to feel the welcoming spirt that Brock is so well known for.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the first two weeks of the semester, the Stay Smart\/Ask Me booths will be open every weekday from 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. to help with general inquiries and to triage questions that may be destined for Brock Central or an academic advisor. The four booths will be located outside of the Campus Store, in the Schmon Tower lobby, across from the Brock Card office and outside of the David S. Howes Theatre.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Simultaneously, many Brock faculty, staff and campus partners will be wearing Ask Me buttons to offer on-the-spot assistance to students with questions as they move around campus.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe will be delivering buttons to all Brock Faculties and offices, and we want staff to know they don\u2019t need to have all of the answers to still help students out,\u201d said Courtney Keogh, Brock\u2019s Recruitment Officer in charge of Smart Start and school groups. \u201cThey can get students pointed in the right direction and offer a friendly face during a busy time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ask Me buttons will also be available in the Recruitment Office\u2019s new location in Cairns 209.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the first two weeks of the term, a booth will be set up for an additional four weeks in the space across from the Brock Card office.
