{"id":59665,"date":"2019-08-15T10:56:25","date_gmt":"2019-08-15T14:56:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=59665"},"modified":"2019-08-16T11:10:24","modified_gmt":"2019-08-16T15:10:24","slug":"international-educators-build-esl-skills-at-brock","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2019\/08\/international-educators-build-esl-skills-at-brock\/","title":{"rendered":"International educators build ESL skills at Brock"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the past four weeks, instructors from China have been developing new teaching skills at Brock University that they hope to apply in classrooms back home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Run by Brock\u2019s Continuing Teacher Education program, the professional development initiative welcomed 11 English as a subsequent language (ESL) educators from Minjiang University in Fujian, China, to study at Brock over the course of a month.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As English is not the first language of the ESL instructors, they sometimes experience unique challenges in the classroom that the Brock program hopes to help address.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_59667\" style=\"width: 434px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-59667\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-59667\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/ESL-instructors-from-China-2-RS-1050x700.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"424\" height=\"283\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-59667\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Wang Hui, Chen Danxia and Wu Huiying came to Brock to strengthen their teaching skills as ESL instructors at Minjiang University.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During their stay at Brock, the instructors have explored a range of topics including instructional strategies, differentiated instruction, classroom management, future-ready skills, learning strategies, education in Ontario, Indigenous culture and supporting English language learners.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe had many classes, lectures and workshops in the past month. The instructors and their teaching skills have left a deep impression on me,\u201d said participant Wang Hui. \u201cWe also enjoyed the beautiful scenery, tasted delicious food and experienced Canadian culture. I most enjoy the friendliness and kindness of people here.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Outside the classroom, the group explored the Niagara region and other areas of the province.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The itinerary included visits to wineries and a maple syrup producer, a trip on the Hornblower in Niagara Falls and tours of Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal and Kingston. The group also toured the University of Toronto and Queen\u2019s University to get a broader understanding of post-secondary education in Ontario.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe program provides opportunities for personal growth as well as events and excursions that promote personal and professional friendships that will last a lifetime,\u201d said Tony DiPetta, Director of the Continuing Teacher Education program.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The initiative\u2019s areas of focus are meant to teach lessons at Brock that will benefit the instructors and their students long after they return to China.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI enjoyed every minute I stayed here,\u201d said participant Wu Huiying before the group\u2019s last day on Friday, Aug. 16. \u201cI will try to adapt those creative activities I have learned at Brock into my teaching when I\u2019m back home.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_59668\" style=\"width: 486px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-59668\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-59668\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/ESL-instructors-from-China-3-RS-1050x641.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"476\" height=\"291\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-59668\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Eleven Minjiang instructors joined Brock faculty and staff at a welcome breakfast for the group when they began their time at the University four weeks ago.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Chen Danxia returns to China, she plans to \u201capply the teaching philosophy, the \u2018inclusive learning experiences\u2019 and those fascinating activities I have learned in Brock in my class.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI do hope that students will be motivated and every one of them will be a better person,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is the second time the Brock program has been run in the Faculty of Education, with a pilot session occurring in 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In June 2019, Michael Owen, Dean of the Faculty of Education, Mary-Louise Vanderlee, Chair of the Department of Educational Studies, and Elizabeth Ye, International Program Co-ordinator in the Faculty of Education, travelled to Minjiang University.
