{"id":59533,"date":"2019-08-07T15:55:43","date_gmt":"2019-08-07T19:55:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=59533"},"modified":"2019-08-07T15:55:43","modified_gmt":"2019-08-07T19:55:43","slug":"brock-honour-society-wins-top-award-in-houston","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2019\/08\/brock-honour-society-wins-top-award-in-houston\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock honour society wins top award in Houston"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For the third consecutive year, a group of Brock students have received a prestigious award from the world\u2019s largest international honour society.<\/p>\n<p>From a pool of more than 350 schools, the Brock chapter of Golden Key International was one of just 27 winners of the Key Chapter Award \u2014 the highest honour a chapter can receive \u2014 at the Golden Key Leadership Summit in Houston, Texas, from July 26 to 28.<\/p>\n<p>Founded in 1977, Golden Key welcomes the top 15 per cent of students from the faculties of its member institutions and encourages students to focus on academic leadership and service to help them achieve their personal, professional and altruistic goals.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_59535\" style=\"width: 384px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-59535\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-59535\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Daislyn-Vidal.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"374\" height=\"257\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-59535\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Daislyn Vidal, Brock\u2019s 2018-19 Golden Key Chapter President, spoke at CANCON, the international honour society\u2019s Canadian leadership summit in February.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Brock\u2019s representative at the summit, Amanda MacDonald (BRLS \u201917), said the chapter award highlights the University\u2019s continued commitment to fostering well-rounded students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt shows that Brock has a global reach, that leadership is strong amongst our students and that we are outperforming some of the top universities from across the world,\u201d said MacDonald, past president of Brock\u2019s chapter, current Chair of the International Council of Student Leaders, and a member of the International Leadership Council and Board of Directors for Golden Key International.<\/p>\n<p>Along with organizing socials and fundraisers, the chapter brings together like-minded students and provides scholarships, online development programs, mentoring programs, conferences and study abroad opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>Daislyn Vidal (BSc \u201919), Brock\u2019s Chapter President for 2018-19, said the award was not unexpected after Brock students continued to organize outreach events, including the Trick or Eat food drive and Textbooks for Change book donation initiative. The chapter also planned <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2019\/02\/students-invited-to-participate-in-honour-societys-leadership-summit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CANCON, Golden Key\u2019s Canadian leadership summit<\/a>, which took place from Feb. 22 to 24 in Niagara Falls and welcomed more than 100 participants from across the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was so excited to hear the news of the award, and I felt so proud for all of our executive members,\u201d Vidal said. \u201cI was very relieved, especially after planning CANCON. I could not imagine that we would receive anything less, and it\u2019s an honour to reach that level for the third year in a row.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vidal said the lofty achievements of the relatively young Brock chapter \u2014 founded in 2013 \u2014 contribute to a culture of excellence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel like the award is not only about our reputation.
